Great article. Like most of you, I am stunned that McDougale would have been a Chief instead of Alexander had the Cat been gone...Had that happen I would still be on a heavy dose of Prozac to calm myself down.

JQ - Another thought that just popped into my head, could it be that the Raiders thought we were looking at Jano and figured that since that they took the Chiefs guy that they could still get their other player and we would be willing to trade down to pick up our 20th tackle in 5 years.

The fact that our #3 and #4 choices were both Tackles led me to believe that if we stayed at 21 we were once again going OT. The only dissenting opinion was Gun; CP and Bradshaw both were high on the Tackles. Bradway did begin researching what players were "desirable" should we choose to trade down with SF or Buffalo.

The information I read didn't have KC considering Alexander at all. The only back discussed was Dillon and that talk died down early.

Great article!

Like most, I am baffled/scared that we would have taken another OL in the first round if Morris weren't available.

Morph,

I think if you look at the Raiders draft history you'll see that we always are very aggressive in moving up so i'm not surpised we called KC because I think we call everybody. That said, I would have fallen out of my chair if KC had accomadated us, maybe Al thought that Gun still hada little Silver and Black in him.

I personally think Al gets as caught up in the draft as we do and takes a aggressive approach. he traded up to get Russell, Dudley and tried like crazy to get Randy Moss the year we drafted Woodson. If the Vikes hadn't taken him one pick ahead, Moss would have been a Raider.

JQ - Interesting. To be honest for years I only paid attention to who the Chiefs drafted and what position they played. I'm not a fan of college football, so I don't know any of the players anyway.

Excellent article, AZChief. Wonderful behind the scenes stuff.

I literally would have blown up my TV had they drafted yet another tackle. I believe that would make 4 of the last 6 #1's for the Chiefs OT's.

I think Alexander will be a great back and Im really suprised there was no talk of Shaun at all.

AZ,
As a die-hard draftnik, I loved your article today. I believed at the time that O'Neal was the pick for us. It is becoming obvious that Morris was the way to go. How many of us sat in front of ESPN that day and tried to figure out who goes where and who would drop to us? I would give ANYTHING to sit in with the braintrust on that day. Boy, was that a great article!

I used to attend the draft out at Arrowhead. Cellular One used to sponsor a get together and I was able to obtain passes through them. My wife went with me the first year to see what was up and after that, I either went alone or took a friend.

The last three years I attended, I would "sneak" up into the press area. There really wasn't much sneaking involved, though. I just walked in like I belonged. Then I would stay there during the draft, see Marty and Carl come in and hold their press conference after our picks, and even be there when the press called the 1st round pick on the phone. Heck, I even asked Marty a question myself one year.

Unfortunately, with the first day of the draft being moved to Saturday, I'm unable to attend now. But I still tape it and watch it later in the day and sweat right along with the rest of you.

Great article, AZ. And great site! Thanks.

After reading that article, I would like to thank the Raiders for drafting Janikowski allowing the Chiefs to take a WR instead of another OL.

AZ,

That is truly great stuff. I really enjoyed it. I can't believe that they were so close to drafting another tackle either. I love Gun's quotes "I don't want to hear about it!". LOL. He was damn right.

I also remember reading something just prior to the draft about Carl not being impressed with or interested in Shaun Alexander. There seemed to be more of a chance of them trading up to get Jamal Lewis than there was to draft Alexander! I couldn't understand that then, and certainly can't now. But thankfully they got the Cat!

It's really impressive that they got the top 12 guys going in order in their projections. I wonder if other teams were that on the ball. Probably so, but still that is great.

Finally, what was CP saying about "getting something for Pennington" "make a deal later in the draft"??? I wonder what kind of deal he was talking about...........draft a player and use him for extra picks or trade bait for FAs on the same day???

Great job AZ.

That is an incredible article!!!!!

I previously could only dream of the inner workings of the Draft Day War Room. This was way cool, man!!

Where can I get this Yearbook?

BTW, the most excellent aspect of the story, IMHO, was Gun not wanting to hear any talk of taking another Tackle with the 1st round pick! Way to go Gun!!

Terrific article. Came to three conclusions:

1. Glad Mr. Brown is an idiot.

2. Glad we were so far down in the draft that we didn't pick Deltha. He looks like he'll be good, but Sylvester is gonna be great.

3. I'd like to play high stakes poker with Gunther.

Really good read.

I think one of the really interesting things was how even in the offseason the same three teams give us headaches! Denver, Seattle, and Oakland all effected KCs draft drastically.
