Medical tourism and ACL surgery

Has anyone here ever gone to another country for a medical procedure? If so, please share your experience if you are willing.

For those who have had an ACL repaired… can you tell me what I might be in for?

Long story short… I have no medical insurance and a torn ligament in my knee. Looking around and I find that I can get my ACL repaired AND stay a week in an all inclusive resort in Costa Rica for about 35% of the cost of doing it here in the US.

Even less in the Dominican Republic.

I’m leaning towards Costa Rica because they have world class medical centers there though vs in the DR where they are working with equipment from the 80s and 90s.

Buddy of mine had a surgery in Thailand. said it was very cool, lots of hot babes and near a beach. Like a 5 star resort but medical vacation. Saved money too apparently.

Actually it's usually cheaper after the flight, stay and surgery than it would be here with insurance...

Our medical prices are so outrageous you can literally book a 2 week vacation and have a major surgery, pay all out of pocket and do it cheaper than you can in the US with insurance.

I had my ACL done 20 years ago. I was off it for about 3 days, then walking with crutches after that. At least six weeks.

Not sure how I would have felt getting on a plane just after that.

It is a minimally invasive surgery-even less now.

Biggest thing to think about. Who's ACL will you be getting?

a. yours from your patella

b. donor from an unknown source in another country

Then you have to think about pain management. I went off major pain killers after 3 days. I hate them.

The cadaver surgery is a much faster recovery.

I've known a couple of people who would fly to Mexico to get dental work. It was good for them, but then again they both spoke fluent Spanish. Can you somehow get an English-fluent facility to do the work?

If you live in Missouri or another state with expanded Medicaid and make less than $20,120, then you are eligible for expanded Medicaid.

ACL repair for me they took a piece out of my hamstring and now that acts as my ACL. I think this is still the case or they'll use a cadaver but I believe a cadaver is used when you reinjure the same knee multiple times. Recovery isn't too bad, little stiffness and soreness for a couple days but you'll be walking fairly soon. Doctors will want you moving and using your knee as soon as possible to ensure you retain your full range of motion. I think the biggest change lifestyle wise post ACL surgery is if you are still active in sports, you'll want to ensure you really strength your lower body to ensure you don't re-injure it. Pre-op and post-op it is very important to get in the gym and strengthen your muscles to prevent atrophy as much as possible.

Take your time rehabbing your knee before you jump back into anything strenuous (anything with sudden movement/stopping). One of the hospitals here had a program specifically for people with knee injuries, twice a week movement specific and strength training exercises for rehab. I would look if there's anything local for you as well. I took a solid 18 months before returning to sport and I was able to do so without a knee brace and it's been fine so far.

How did you tear your ACL if you don't mind me asking?

My son just had his done in January..the Doctor told him he was using a cadaver unless he had any reason for him not to, first time injury etc. That basically if you do it any other way you add serious time to the recovery etc.

My insurance can be a bitch at times but this thread makes it all worth it. I never have to pay more than 6k out of pocket per year. 4 surgeries in the family in 2022 plus several ER visits and an ambulance ride and paid no more than 6k.

How much was just the ambulance ride cost if I may ask?
