Report: Weaver trying to sell Jaguars
http://news.jacksonville.com/justin/...-sell-jaguars/
The Jaguars had no immediate comment Wednesday night on a Philadelphia Daily News report that team owner Wayne Weaver is negotiating to sell the team to billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, who could move the team to Los Angeles. Team spokesman Ryan Robinson said Weaver was traveling on Wednesday and wouldn’t be available until today. Metropoulos, 61, the former chairman and chief executive officer of New Jersey-based Pinnacle Foods, denied the newspaper’s report. “I must tell you I haven’t had any such discussions,” Metropoulos was quoted in the Daily News. “I wouldn’t know how to give you any credibility to that because I don’t know anything about it.” The Daily News reported that discussions between Weaver and Metropoulos are being brokered by Sal Galatioto of the New York sports investment firm Galatioto Sports Partners. The newspaper reported that Metropoulos previously has tried to buy two other NFL franchises — the Oakland Raiders and the Miami Dolphins — but was unsuccessful. Metropoulos, according to the report, is interested in a 100 percent purchase of the Jaguars immediately, though unnamed sources told the paper he would keep Weaver on for two years while he learns how to operate an NFL franchise. The sources told the newspaper that Metropoulos would bring in minority partners with him, and that the Jaguars would be a candidate to move to Los Angeles, which is seeking an NFL team. Weaver has consistently denied any interest in selling in the team, though he acknowledged last year that has was looking for additional investors for the franchise. The Jaguars, who joined the league in 1995, reached the second round of the AFC playoffs last season, but had three of their eight home games blacked out because they weren’t sold out. They’re consistently mentioned in media reports as a candidate to move to Los Angeles, but Weaver has consistently denied that the team is for sale. |

Ive never understood the LA lovefest that the NFL has (well, i do, but it doesnt make sense)
Everyone in SoCal is from somewhere else. Their loyalties lie elsewhere.

it would suck if the Jags moved to LA, i love Jacksonville, and ive always liked the Jags ever since they were formed....Jacksonville just isnt big on its hometown team i guess, which is to bad. usually the smaller market teams have great fan bases. (ie: Kansas City, Green Bay)

I think NY would support a 3rd football team better than LA would support one.

IMO Jacksonville was a bargaining chip to help get new stadiums in other markets. If they would have given the team to St. Louis or Baltimore like they should have, you would havent had the new stadiums in Cleveland, Houston, and butt load of other cities. The NFL basically knew that no team would move to Jacksonville, those other cities they would and they did besides Memphis which ended up being Nashville's team instead.

What about Chicago taking a second team... Unless they've given up, using an NFL team as a reason to build a new facility (probably dome) to try and secure a bid for the Olympics..

Greasy Al coming to LA, then leaving after playing in a DMZ? The LA Rams sold out at the Coliseum for 30 years before Frontiere moved the team to Anaheim after her husband's death. After battling the city, she bailed for St. Louis. It had nothing to do with fans or attendance. It was a money grab. |

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones has been arrested on cocaine charges in Arkansas. The Washington County Sheriff's Office says officers arrested Jones and two other men as they sat in a Toyota 4Runner in an unlit parking lot in a known drug area. The preliminary arrest report shows an officer saw Jones sitting in the back seat of the car with a white card with a white powdery substance on it, and a credit card in his other hand. The officer said he opened the door and asked Jones to "put his hands where he could see them." Authorities say Jones didn't comply right away and hid his left hand. The officer drew his gun and ordered Jones out of the vehicle. Jones got out and the officer put him in handcuffs. A second officer placed the other two men under arrest. They're identified as Benjamin Cook, 26, and Jared Hicks, 25. Jones is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Cook and Hicks face misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia. Jones is entering his 4th season with the Jaguars. He was the 21st overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Since making the transition from college quarterback to NFL wide receiver, Jones' career in Jacksonville has mostly been a disappointment. ------------------------------ Early word is he had 6 grams on him and the charges could be upped to intent to distribute. |
