I just sent in my packet for 23andme.com with the saliva/cheek cell sample for genetic mapping. I have several patients that have done it and turned me on to it.

It actually showed a propensity for periodontal disease and certain types of cancer and brain issues/diseases.

I think it is similar to what Angelina Jolie used perhaps. Anyhow, have any of you guys done this? Did it confirm where you thought you were from? History of familial disease? Markers for any diseases?

I can't wait to get mine back.

I did the the 23 and me. No ticking genetic timebombs. I did find out that my family had been in the USA since the early 1700's. My great something owned a mercantile in Philly circa 1704. That information was worth the $50 to send in the sample. Ancestors back to the 1500's in Ireland, Scotland and Germany.

My mom has had testing for the BRCA mutation and Lynch syndrome due to her familial history of cancer. My wife was tested as a CF carrier when she was pregnant b/c she took care of so many patients with CF at her old job. All turned up negative.

it's funny you mention this... this isn't too far off (and is in the realm) of what I'm working on for my Ph.D. we do canine genetics, specifically identifying disease causing mutations using whole genome sequencing. we used to (and still do occasionall) use the SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) arrays (like 23andme uses) to map the genome and determine which alleles are within the genome, but that's a different story.

it's a cool product, frankly, and we're to the point that you'll be able to do a whole genome sequence on yourself in the not-too distant future--it's really an exciting time to be doing molecular genetics.

it's not out of the realm of possiblity, but these things are not black and white. while we have a very solid understanding of how genetics works and mendelian/nonmendelian diseases work (polygenic traits/diseases are confounding, such as epilepsy--we still don't know the answer for the genetic cause for this in a lot of cases), we have absolutely NO FREAKING IDEA how truly vast a role epigenetics plays. it was just found that RNA can be methylated--a HUGE discovery that has a VAST possibility to change how we view things in the future.

The age old nature/nurture debate? it's both. nature is your genetics and some of your epigenetics that were passed from your parents, nurture is the epigenetic effect that comes from your actions and the world around you/environment. it's incredibly complex and I think it's going to be a REALLY long time until we get to the point where we can say 'oh, this person has this gene: they're predisposed, charge them more.' it simply isn't that easy to say aside from a few select genes (the BRCA genes are ones that you can say that, and even then there are modifier genes that can modify the biochemical pathway). fascinating, no?

not in the least. we've attempted to patent a few of our discoveries, but by the time we made it even halfway through the process, they had stopped issuing patents for genetic discoveries. the biotech companies (hate to say it, as much as I admire the man personally, J. Craig Venter and his company were at the forefront) had gone crazy trying to trademark/patent any and everything genetic and really ****ed the game up for everybody else.

I should clarify; the supreme court is going to issue another ruling on the BRCA genes (which are as cut and dried as it gets genetically), and it appears that they are going to go against previous rulings and disallow all future patents on genes.

I basically got nothing from 23 and me. Just my DNA code. I posted it in the forum and allowed people to contact me and see my DNA. You can post just the major parts of the DNA and then people start contacting you thinking you may be related.

Got a lot of 4th cousins emails. I would find out something then post it and someone new would find me and say we are related.

Didn't cost me a thing but time sorting through email and allowing strangers to see my DNA. Since I had no ticking timebombs in my DNA that some insurance company in the future could hold against me, I felt more comfortable releasing my DNA for research to others.

My sister works for medical facility and says that she has access to software that will predict a person's death date. She says she knows within a few months when my parents, me, and her are scheduled to die.

Hey, I will let you know if she accurately predicts my date of death.
