Another Surtain thread? You goddamned right

I've made it pretty obvious this guy is THE ONE that I think will lead us to the promised land. Or should I say the final piece of the illustrious puzzle. This is mostly old news, I just found it interesting that the Miami papers are now talking about the possibility of a 4th rounder this year and a conditional 2nd rounder next year being acceptable. That would be awesome from this Chiefs fans chair. I just post this stuff as I find it, if it's getting old let me know and I'll knock it off.

Miami adds Edwards to defensive backfield
By Greg A. Bedard

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, April 05, 2005

In a move that could signal the departure of cornerback Patrick Surtain, the Dolphins on Monday announced the signing of veteran cornerback Mario Edwards to a one-year contract.

The financial terms of the deal were not available, but Edwards, 29, is believed to have signed for the veteran's minimum to join a defensive backfield that currently is crowded.
But if Surtain is traded to Kansas City as expected, Edwards would compete with Reggie Howard and Will Poole for the spot opposite Sam Madison. If Surtain remains in Miami, Edwards would be the favorite at the nickel spot.

The Chiefs have agreed to Surtain's contract terms — including an eight-figure signing bonus — but continue to face off with the Dolphins over compensation. Dolphins coach Nick Saban said last week that he will insist on at least a third-round draft choice — most likely a second-rounder. But the Chiefs have not yet offered more than a fourth-round pick.

While the Chiefs may give in to the Dolphins' demands, a compromise might be reached with Kansas City sending Miami its fourth-round selection this year and a conditional second-round pick next year. The second-round pick would be contingent on Surtain making enough starts.

By signing the 6-foot, 200-pound Edwards, Saban continues to remake his defense into the big, physical unit that he desires.

Edwards spent his first four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2000 draft from Florida State. Edwards played for Tampa Bay last season.

In his career, Edwards has made 50 starts with 195 tackles, four interceptions and 33 passes defensed.

I believe that this trade scenerio is the best the Chiefs can hope for. Getting Surtain and keeping this years 2nd would be huge. They could trade the pick for a player, use it to move up, or at very least get to add 2 top 50 players to a team in need of young talent.

Of course Carl is going to have to do his part if he ends up 2 Savaii type projects it won't matter at all this season. I have to say this Ware buzz at 15 makes me a bit uneasy.

i would be willing to sling a 'goddamnit, horray, praise the lord' in every thread of this board if we would just sign Surtain

No 2nd this year and no future picks. Use the draft to build the team and use free-agency to add the final piece or two.

The Chiefs' defense has been horrible for years. You cannot fix that with just a few players. Additionaly one should consider the fact that CBs role has been diminished in the league and there is no reason to pay two premiums (a pick and huge bonus) for Patrick Surtain.

Seriously, the Chiefs need to sign a free-agent CB (Law? ) and learn how to draft.

We should also keep an eye on the June cuts. Maybe a DE or CB will become available to us then. It would be nice to have the cap room to sign them if one should become available.

I disagree. Pat Surtain has the stats to show that he is the best CB in the league. Whatever rule changes have happened, I don't believe you pass on an opportunity to add arguably the best CB in the league to your squad for a 2nd round pick. You do need more than 1 guy, but we've already signed 2. Combine Surtain and a decent 1st round draft pick, that makes 4. That's changing out over 33% of our D, and that should be enough to compliment our potent offense. Just my opinion.

The Chiefs need to figure out a way to move into the 6-9 pick range so they can draft DJ & I think it's possible to do that with the Eagles 31 & 35 picks. What would the Chiefs have to give up? I figure their 15 pick this year & probably their first round pick next year. Is that too much to make sure you get DJ? The Chiefs could then trade the 2nd round pick for Surtain which means the Chiefs would have added Bell, Knight, Surtain & DJ to their defense this offseason. I think that'd be enough to get the Chiefs to the playoffs.

Is this feasible?

No. Don't give a conditional 2nd next year. Give a conditional 3rd next year. No one else is bidding on Surtain. Miami has to come to us. We're the only business in town.

My thought exactly.

No one else right now interested, let's hope it stays that way.

Conditional pick, like the Welbourne deal makes the most sense.

It'll happen. Carl is playing hardball like always.

I like it. There's no one else bidding on the guy. Why are we upping our bid so much?

And I'm not offended for the threadstarter taking the lord's name in vain. I'm offended because he's using code to suggest a new world order controlled by the gnomes of zurich. Can't you see it? You must be aliens then. Where's my aluminum foil hat?

I agree! Or maybe add a late round pick to the 4th. ... i.e. a 5th. or 6th. this year.

Which is a little bit dangerous coz it seems we get more starters late in the draft????

Trade a lower this year and a conditional 3rd for Surtain.

Trade our 1 and 2 to move up in the first and get Derrick Johnson.

Eh, I may not like it when people use that. But I've learned that if you're on this bb or most any message board, you've got to learn to roll with the punches. So I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't walk into a bar and expect everyone to change their behavior. I've seen and heard much worse.

I will say that I'm sure God doesn't appreciate it when you do that. But that's a personal thing for everyone to deal with, IMO. I think Vlad is making a bigger deal out of it than anyone who would feel offended would make.

By conditional 3rd I assume you mean for the 2006 draft? If that's the case, I would agree with this scenario.
