How Many Times Were You Sunburned As A Child?

And, I don't mean a little pink. I'm talking full-on peeling and blisters?

I ask because I don't think that my kids will EVER have sunburn as long as my wife's in control. She slathers them with so much sunscreen. I suppose that's a good thing, but the evil part of me thinks that it's a good thing to learn limits. What happens when they're older and think they are impervious to Sol's rays?

I think the only value in letting them get a little burned now would be so they can understand their tolerance level. You'd hate for them to go down to Mexico on spring break in college and get so sunburned that they can't participate in the perverted rituals. Even so, I'd think they'll figure it out as teenagers better than as small children.

I once went to Lake Quivira to swim in the lake with some friends of my family. I didn't put any sunscreen on my back and ended up with skin looking like it'd been melted. I had some of the nastiest blister and I remember that first night, my dad told me he was going to spray it with some stuff that would cool it off. I said sounds great and it turned out to be Lanocaine (sp?). I ran around the house for about 5 minutes in some of the most pain I've ever been in. The burn caused me to miss some baseball games, which pissed me off more than that pain the burn caused.

If I had worn a bike helmet when I was a kid, people would have thought I was a "special" kid. My 8 year old won't go on her bike without her helmet. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I remember when I realized I was going bald. I was raking hay without a hat on, like I always did before, but that night I could not put my head down on a pillow. It peeled and now I wear a hat out all of the time.

I used to burn all the time as a kid. It comes with being one shade away from albino.

I used to blister and peel so bad on my neck and shoulders that my shirt would rest on top of the peeling skin.

now I just hide in my basement until summer is over.

(and when I say "my" basement, I mean my "parent's" basement)

Red hair and blue eyes does not make for good skin pigment. I have been burned and blistered more times than I can count.

I remember we had family friends visiting and they had a very, very cute girl that was a little older than me and I had a huge crush on her. We all went swimming and she got a bad burn. My mom put vinegar on her to cool the burn. Now, everytime I smell vinegar, I think of her.

Granted, although I won't be able to torture them as much if I wait until then.

I must admit, I've always found tan lines on the ladies to be very pleasing.

How long have you been married - you shold know by now your wife is right and your wrong. The topic doesn't really matter

These are just common sense approaches to mitigate known dangers/risks. There's a common triage of injuries from bicycle accidents: 1) car hits kid's body/bike, 2) kids head slams against car hood, 3) kid is thrown head first onto the asphault. The general result is either death or severe brain damage. Sure, the car could be moving so fast the kid is dead from the sheer impact, but most of the accidents the car is trying to stop in time and just can't make it. As for the sunscreen, it's well known and recorded that incidents of skin cancer in later life is strongly correlated with bad burns in childhood. When your kids are older they'll probably be so used to using sunscreen they won't dare go out without it. On the other hand if they do get burned later in life, it won't be as likely to lead to skin cancer.

Approaching our sixth anniversary. I've known her, however, for 12 years.

I know she's just doing what's best. It's just interesting how times have changed. I don't recall my mother EVER putting sunscreen on us growing up. She basically taught us self-reliance. This is the same woman, mind you, that made us swim in the fucking English Channel when the water temperature was 50F.

That's been my concern when I first heard it.

I Really focused on not letting that happen to my kid.
