What advice would you give someone who is applying for supervisory position?

When he has no supervisory experience. I need some buzzwords to throw around. I'd really like to get this job and get some sup/management experience under my belt. It's within the agency i'm in now, so I know I will get an interview, I just need some "helpful hints".

TIA!

Funny note: I once used a Schottenheimer speech in a meeting with admins and staff on team building. It got rave reviews, everyone thought I was this great leader/motivator. Those two little words we and us!!!!!
Which speech was this?

Knowledge mapping. Learning who among your staff and contacts knows how to do what....so you can better utilize the skills of your staff.
Speed dating. Not only will they learn intimate details about each other, you'll also start a 2nd generation of employees to leverage someday.

Focus on your project management experiences and how they related to other departments, individuals, etc. Explain how you were able to keep the other departments/individuals on task and equate that to being the near equivalent to supervision.

All joking aside, this is along the lines of what I'm wanting to do. Its exactly what I used to describe it to the others, only with other obvious differences.

I want everyone to at least meet and trade fundamental information. The reason behind it is that many don't know each other and while some are very outgoing, there is a population that are more introverted and have trouble doing this, and need to be "helped".

I'm trying to figure out how to logistically accomplish this and make it fun for up to 150 people. realistically, they may not all interact, but it would be a good start I think and build on the rest of the week of training.

Talk to them about how you are going to improve efficiency with the use of new cover sheets on the TPS reports.

We had a team-building weekend back at my first job out of college (in '95). We did ropes course and the thing where several people have to stand on a stump at the same time by balancing each other. Stuff like that. I don't remember it building much teamwork though. Being fresh out of college and all, most of us just focused on the attractive female coworkers squirming in the repelling harnesses on the way down.

Oh yeah....

I just had a resume' on my desk and after browsing the cover letter, it reminded me of another piece of information.

Don't spell "matrix"..."matrices" on your cover letter.

Be polite.

Have the interviewer pull your finger before you fart in the interview.

Works like a charm.
