CHIEFS RELEASE STOYANOVICH
Chiefs Ink Peterson, Look To Sign Ricks
by Marty McDonald
Posted on 10/11/2000

America's Heartland will have a new kicker to cheer for on Sunday. NFLScoop has exlusively learned that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent kicker Todd Peterson and waived Pete Stoyanovich in a late Tuesday roster move. The team will also sign WR Mikael Ricks as their 5th wide receiver and that move could happen as early as Wednesday morning.

Peterson was cut in Seattle after an abdominal injury slowed him during training camp. Peterson's salary wasn't in favor either as the 'Hawks opted for rookie Kris Heppner who they later waived.

While Peterson will not kick-off, he would bring consistency to the position, something the Chiefs have lacked this season. Incumbent kicker Pete Stoyanovich is 2-4 on field goal attempts. One of Stoyanovich's misses cost them a week two victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Ricks, released last week by San Diego, brings incredible size and undeveloped talent to the position.

Marty,

I don't want to sound like this is all about a negative attack on you, but I remember seeing those exact same kind of quotes from you in the past on the other BB. I wish I could remember what the scenario was, but basically you made the same kind of claim about "inside sources" and some major deal, but it never happened. So I think you can understand that I for one am very skeptical of this news.

Now if it turns out to be true, then I say kudos to you for breaking the story and I'll be back on here posting said kudos.

Now back to my question. Is Peterson any good?

Everyone,

I don't know Marty, but I've followed his reporting on this and 'the other' bb for some time now.

My take is that Marty does have a source. The problem arrises in that nothing is official ~ until it is official!

This is a fast paced business and decisions are made (and changed) quickly.

Not everything he has clued us in on has come to pass, but many have. If nothing else, his reporting has given me good insight into the thinking of the Chiefs organization.

As a fan, I have a choice. I can sit back and not believe, read, or listen to anything until it is official, or I can enjoy hearing about the inside workings and mechanations of the Chiefs organization.

I choose the later.

Thanks Marty.

Luz

I also thought that Peterson had an injury that was going to keep him from kicking for about 6 weeks, and I read that sometime after the first game, so I'm going to wait and see for it to be official.

If they did sign him we will have to hear about it today, because Peterson is going to have to get a lot reps in practice, Saur is going to have to get used to the way he wants the ball held for his kicks.

From NFLtalk.com (Bob Dole knows...yada yada yada...)

Contrary to some reports being floated around the 'net, the Chiefs have not, as of 8:56 a.m. EST this morning, signed kicker Todd Peterson to a contract and have not released current kicker Pete Stoyanovich. A source within the Chiefs organization has told NFLtalk that while an agreement in principle has been reached with Peterson and his agent, Kansas City will not officially sign him until he passes a physical. That is where the situation gets sticky as Peterson is recovering from an adductor strain that has kept him from working out with any teams before yesterday. If Peterson passes the physical, he could officially sign as early as today.

I was just over reading the Star BB and this same post was over there. Exactly the same post as what you see here. Someone copied and pasted the article and added no comments at all. The one on the Star was posted at 6:41am by Jackson Jones and the one here was posted at 6:44am by Touchdown Ted. I think Marty posted both of these just to get hits at his web site. This has nothing to do with whether I think this rumor is true or not, I just thought it was a bit odd they were posted so close in time.

Gary-

The post you are talking about was a Corey Dillon coming to KC. The deal was done, but the draft pick compensation broke it. The 'Nati wanted more than KC was willing to give. I don't take offense to any of this because it's your right as a fan to be skeptical. I respect that right.

Peterson is good and he has some juice in his leg, while Stoyanovich is a good kicker, he is on the downside of his career. Peterson had an injury that allowed rookie Kris Heppner to take his job.

Here are Todd's stats with Pete's. Todd has been in the league since 1994, so I went back and traced Stoyo's stats to that year. Pete played with Miami in 1994 and 1995 before coming to KC in 1996. Enjoy!

Range: 1-29 Yards
TP: 45-47 (95.7%)
PS: 53-57 (93%)

Range: 30-39 Yards
TP: 36-44 (81.8)
PS: 39-46 (84.7%)

Range: 40-49 Yards
TP: 40-51 (78.4)
PS: 42-60 (70%)

Range: 50+ Yards
TP: 7-16 (43.89)
PS: 8-17 (47%)

TODD PETERSON OVERALL: 128-158 (81%)
PETE STOYANOVICH OVERALL: 142-180 (78.8%)

YEARS: 1994-1999

**Stoyanovich's career record: 267-333 (80.2%)

Is this a possibility?

Can Saurbran kick field goals until Peterson is fully recovered?

Maybe the organization knew they couldn't wait until he was fully recovered to grab him?

I kind of feel bad for Stoyo in this whole thing. I mean, he did drop us out of the play offs last year and lost the Tennessee game, but he has also won a lot of big games. The Denver game in 97 and the game in Oakland last year that started the winning streak. He has given us a lot, doesn't he deserve to go out with some dignity, not booted in mid season in favor of a gimpy contender?

DJay - With the current FG kicker situation in the NFL it might be impossible to upgrade during the offseason, there have been a couple injuries and about 3 or 4 kickers replaced already. If there is a solid younger kicker avaible in the right price range, then we should grab them. It is sad the way the NFL works, but it is about winning.

The more you win, the more fans come to game in a good mood, the more money they spend, the more cash you have to give signing bonuses...

I know this is a necessary move, Stoyo is definitely not the Pk he once was, I just wish this move were made in the off season when Nedney was available.

Come on people, Stoyo has tried 4, count 'em 4 FGs....so he's missed 2...who's to say that won't be the only two he misses all year...I am not ready to give up on him just yet...I have a feeling he'll come through big this year and probably be around next year....

Now Ricks, I'd love to see him signed...even if he doesn't work out it would be worth the try....
