They don't make automobiles like they used to

And thank god for that! Holy WAH! I can imagine what accident investigations of the past were like

The second video, first 2 minutes is all Mopars. Dammit I would like to have some of those parts now.

Seatbelts were part of the 68 federal laws IIRC along with the padded dash, pcv valve, side marker lights, and non obtrusive dash knobs. Detroit screamed about it, but it was justification for raising prices.

We had a 60 Dodge wagon, the knobs to the controls had to be at least an inch and a half long.

Like Tim said, I remember standing up in the middle of the front seat on trips when I was little. That is how we rolled. I think Dad's 65 Dodge Monaco had seat belts, but our 67 didn't.

I know those knobs in particular caused some pretty gruesome injuries in crashes - it would be like taking a 12 gauge slug in addition to the unrestrained impact. Ouch.

Yeah, safety wasn't even really a passing thought by the manufacturers back then.

I remember as a kid, looking at those knobs and asking Dad about it. They scared me at 10 years old.

They use to put a black sign with a + (cross) on it on the country roads to mark where people were killed in auto accidents. (Kansas anyway) That must have stopped a long time ago..Anyone else remember seeing those?

That's still done, at least if someone cares enough about the victim to do it. Last winter a medical helicopter crashed a couple of miles from my house, killing all onboard (including the patient, who was a baby girl). There are still four wooden crosses by the road near the accident site.

My parents had one. Your feet basically rests on the back of the headlight. There is only a thin sheet of metal between you and anything you hit.

Yeah, that was pretty darn impressive. I think the Malibu driver could've walked away, but I think the Bel Aire driver might've broken their neck when they hit the collapsing roof of the car. That didn't look pretty.
