I agree. Why not just round everything to the nearest nickel and be done with it.

On that note, when the hell are we going to get some $500 and $1,000 bills? Yeah, I know, electronic age, pay for everything with debit cards, we're afraid of drug lords, blah blah blah, screw all that, shift the decimal point and give us another zero already.

I was at the Richard Nixon Library last month and read something about him devaluing the dollar. I think he did something different, but we could do what third-world countries do and just lop a zero off of everything - debt, savings, prices, etc. That would make the penny relevant again.

A current dollar would then be worth $10? Oddly reminiscent of the early 20th Century, but nothing seemed to go wrong then...count me in!

So, my salary drops to below $10,000? Screw that!

Seriously, people would be pissed about that.. even if it bought the same amount of goods.

Good to know the government is spending money on necessary things like changing the penny.

other way around, an old dollar would be worth a new dime, new dollars would be more valuable and relevant.

I'm neutral to how we do it, I just want to be able to carry a lot of money in just a few bills. Countries that never devalue currency end up like Japan with 10,000 and 100,000 yen notes, prices for little cheap stuff routinely have lots of zeroes, etc.

Thats probably the easier route to go because people would ignorantly freak out if they had to turn in their old twenties for a couple new ones and their annual salary had one less zero, even though it is all semantics and the amount of goods they can buy with their labor doesnt change. I don't care either way, but if the stupid government doesn't want to make $500 and $1,000 bills, then just devalue everything so we get to the same result.

Actually now that I think about it, I think I prefer that approach. Yeah if we didn't devalue we'd get to see new presidents or whatever, but it would be a shame if the money that features our two greatest presidents became near-worthless garbage bills. The one and the five should always be relevant.

I think the reason they don't get rid of the penny is because of how people would begin to take advantage of the rounding.

Take enough fractions of a penny and you've got yourselves a lot of money.

There's no reason to keep the nickel either. We don't have to use 2 decimal points, cut it off at one decimal. You could make that argument for rounding off at 2 decimals too, why dont we introduce tenths of a penny?

Eventually if inflation runs for another factor of ten then there's no reason to go under a dollar. I dont think Japan even has fractions of yen anymore, 1 yen is almost worthless enough.

Bullshit, The separate Mcdonald's franchise in town do this now!

I've been charged 2 cents more for the exact same order at one particular location than the others.

Damn greedy bastards.

Don't care. That motto wasn't put on our currency until the mid-1950's anyway because we were all frightened of those evil godless commie bastards. The founding fathers never saw a need for it.
