Sanchez has MRI on throwing shoulder, has torn cartilage

There are several types of cartilage in the shoulder so this could be just discomfort or worse...

I think we should all make an effort to post as much Jets stuff as possible because IMO we're going to play them in the playoffs.

Mark Sanchez has slight cartilage tear in right shoulder, but Jets QB says he'll play against Bears

The Daily News has learned that Sanchez has a slight cartilage tear in his right shoulder. Sanchez admitted that "it didn't feel right" when he landed awkwardly on his throwing shoulder during a first-quarter run. Whether the cartilage damage will hamper the second-year quarterback for the remainder of the season is unclear. Rex Ryan revealed on Monday that Sanchez underwent a precautionary MRI on Monday.

Sanchez maintained during his session with the media on Wednesday that he'll absolutely play against the Bears on Sunday. Rex Ryan was "99 percent sure" that Sanchez will start. The Jets (10-4) will clinch its second consecutive playoff appearance under Ryan with a win. They'll also punch their ticket to the postseason if either the Colts or Jaguars lose.

Sources told the Daily News that Sanchez should be "fine" for Sunday. The quarterback could conceivably play the remainder of the regular season and playoffs without incident.

The quarterback left little doubt that he'll be under center in Chicago even if he's not 100 percent healthy.

"Whether I am or not, I'm in there," Sanchez said. "I'm playing. That's all there is to it. I got to be on the field. That's what I'm here for and that's what I'm going to do."

Sanchez only did some soft tossing in position drills and handed the ball off on Wednesday, Ryan said. He also mixed in a few left-handed throws at one point. Both the coach and quarterback said that he could have played if the Jets had a game Wednesday.

"I'm being safe about it," Sanchez said. "I'm in it for the long haul. We have hopefully 6-7 weeks left. I want to make it through all those weeks. I know I can with our trainers… and the rehab stuff going on there… I'll do my best to get a full practice in (this week), but if not, I'll be ready to play."

Although Ryan said that Sanchez didn't necessarily have to fully practice during the week to get the start, the coach admitted he'd like to see his quarterback "zip" the ball at some point at some point.

"If he can't go and he doesn't feel like he can go, then we'll play (Mark) Brunell and Kellen (Clemens)," Ryan said. "I think he's going to be able to go."

Sanchez, of course, played was nearly flawless against the Steelers even after suffering the injury. He said he kept his shoulder loose throwing on the sideline.

"Once you get in the game, your energy and adrenaline take over," said Sanchez. "I felt like I could still help the team so I didn't want to go and come out."

Sanchez took part in what he called "invisible football" during Wednesday's practice. He gave calls to Brunell and Clemens and worked on footwork drills on the side with quarterbacks coach Matt Cavannaugh. Sanchez worked on drop backs and audibles to help get ready for the Bears and "try to make it as game-like as possible."

Sanchez also admitted that he wasn't thrilled with Ryan's decision to pull a few first-team practice reps from him last week.

"We have an understanding that I don't always agree with him," Sanchez said. "It's personal to me. I think he knows that. I think the guys on the team know that. I don't care if it's a handoff or a wildcat play. I want to be in the game. That's just the way I feel. I'm possessive about this job."

Sanchez said that he didn't harbor any ill feelings toward Ryan. He also said his talk with the coach wasn't heated.

"We're both competitive," Sanchez said. "I think part of it was a psychological thing just to kind of test me a little bit…. Last week, I disagreed with coming out. That's all."

There are two types of cartilage in the shoulder. The first type, called fibrocartilage, lines the rim of the socket of the shoulder. This rim of cartilage, known as the labrum, acts to deepen the socket of the shoulder, increasing joint stability. Tears of the labrum result in vague constant shoulder pain, a clicking or catching sensation with shoulder movement, and shoulder joint instability.

Hyaline cartilage, covers the articulating surfaces of the shoulder joint, providing cushioning during joint movement. Damage to hyaline cartilage causes pain, and can result in arthritis. The cartilage can become thin and irregular, due to “wear and tear” over time. If bare spots in the cartilage develop, this results in painful “bone on bone” movement of the joint. Eventually, further breakdown of the cartilage will occur, and arthritis of the shoulder will develop.

Defects in the cartilage can also occur from trauma to the shoulder. This type of fracture of the joint surface, known as an osteochrondral fracture, will usually hasten the onset of arthritis.

Which, as we all know, is the only part of the game that matters. 1st through 3rd quarter performance is for pretenders.

Aren't you the one who posted something last week about us not making the playoffs?

Sanchez now a game-time decision. Chiefs still lose the tiebreakers with the Jets if they (the Jets) lose out, right?

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was on the field Thursday morning for practice, but he didn't look comfortable.

The quarterback, with a cartilage tear in his throwing arm, made a soft toss here or there, but nothing with any power behind it. A few times, he held his arm awkwardly.

A source confirmed that an MRI revealed the tear. Both Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens, the Jets' backup quarterbacks, made a full complement of throws.

Sanchez said on Wednesday that he would play Sunday when the Jets attempt to clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Chicago Bears.

Santonio Holmes was also at practice. Coach Rex Ryan announced on Wednesday that the wide receiver had turf toe. Ryan said he expected Holmes to play on Sunday as well.

That's one of the worst injuries a QB can have.

If his backup was better he'd play. Nobody worries about a team's backup QB coming in, that's r-tarded.

I thought he injured his shoulder. How come Rex said he would have to examine Sanchez's feet personally before he could make a decision on whether he could go or not.
