Need a car, have a $5500 budget, suggestions?

Needing to get a second car. Have about $5500 in cash, and I don't want a payment since it will make the family budget tighter. Was thinking a truck or SUV, but it seems like they are out of my price range. Looking for something that will run well, be able to cart around a couple of kids if need be, and does not have rust. Craigslist so far seems to be full of rust buckets, scams and overpriced stuff from dealers. Any suggestions on what to look for in a reliable used car? Any good used car dealers in KC for that price range that anyone would like to recommend? Thanks!

Maybe he enjoys driving a truck or SUV and would not be happy driving something with a rubber band motor. If you're happy doing that, great some of us "nit wits" are not. Its a second car get what you want.

Right, but he said he has a budget and is demanding reliability. He was "thinking" SUV. That wasn't a requirement. So he should either reduce the reliability requirement or increase his budget to satisfy something that wasn't an actual requirement. Good planning.

If you're insistent on an SUV, can't beat an old 99-01 Cherokee or even older 4runner for that type of money. I would second the recommendation though for older civic/accord though. Will save you money all over the place over an SUV, they are expensive to insure, I was amazed my S2000 was cheaper than the Cherokee for insurance. Plus gas price is also a huge factor.

Happy Hunting

4 dollar gas and you're considering an old truck/suv. Human behavior is amazing to me.

VARSITY
In June '08, I got an '05 Infiniti G35x from a guy who goes to auctions. It was in great shape, right off lease, and had 45k miles. I got it for $17k, and it was blue booked at 24k.

I've got $9k left on payments, and trade in value is anywhere from $12-$13.

All that to say, I got a good deal from a combination of auction and 1 year off lease.

A 4runner, CRV or Santa Fe are decent choices if you are really looking for an SUV that won't kill you on gas. Otherwise, go with an Accord.

Those who know me know that I love Buicks in general, I had a ton of them. Early 2000's and up Buicks are really nice, I traded a car down on a 2000 Lesabre with 79k on it (wanted cheaper payments) these things run like clockwork. The 3.8 motor's never die, the interiors are loaded, comfortable cars, and they have a ton of space, plenty of space for 2 kids and luggage in the trunk. Insurance is cheap, I get 24mpg and I drive a mixture of freeway and in-town, but I sit in traffic going to and from work quite a bit, I would say if I did 50/50 mixture with little traffic I would get 26/27. On the freeway I get about 33.

With $5500? You might as well invest in a tow truck instead.............

I just bought a 2004 Chrysler Concorde from a private owner on Craiglist for 2K. The vehicle books at 5800. It only had 74K on it. I realize that's not normal, but those deals are out there. I always say, buy a car for 2k and drive it for 2 years. you'll be ahead money. I've been burned a couple of times (ironically never on craigslist, but it's always a possibility). If you have a friend who is a mechanic, take them with you to look at the vehicle. Get a roomy sedan with a big trunk and drive that pig till the wheels fall off. Car payments suck balls.

Hmm I didn't know SUV's were inherently unreliable, noted from now on.

No, but a given SUV of comparable quality to a given car will sell for probably twice as much money in his price range because people will overpay for them.
