In case the diagram I posted isn't clear enough...
1. The "number" of cousin (first cousin, second cousin) is determined by how many generations you have to go above your parents to find a common ancestor. If the common ancestor is a grandparent, that's a first cousin. If the common ancestor is a great grandparent, that's a second cousin. 2. The "removed" part is a generational thing. If they're in the same generation as you, there's no "removed." If it's a cousin's kids, that's a generational difference, so that's one-level removed. It's all pretty clear if you have a true family tree diagrammed out. The "number" is determined by how many lines you have to go up before to find the common ancestor (minus one for your parents). The "removed" part is determined by how many horizontal rows you have to move to get from Person A to Person B. |
