1 year sounds right. Baltimore signed him on a 4 year contract extension in '11

That's why Routt, Boss and Winston were good signings.

We are basically getting Routt, Boss and a third round pick for Brandon Carr if we keep doing this right.

I'll take him. He's smallish and doesn't offer much in the way of run support, but he's actually not that bad in coverage. Will also be a valuable asset on Special Teams. Should come cheap.

Third round might be right, though it could be a 4th. The extra good news is that we get a kicker for losing Orton to Dallas. The bad news is that Winston may count as a major FA and probably knock us down to a 4th or 5th round comp pick, depending on whom else we lose or gain.

Only qualifying free agents count at all.

Qualifying free agents are ones who's contracts run out...guys that get cut aren't in the equation whatsoever.

If the count of lost qualifying free agents to signed ones is less, a comp pick is awarded.

Depending on the cost of those signings and their playing time is what dictates how good of a pick is awarded.

Carr got big money.
