GRONK!!! Extended 6 years, $54 Million

Sweet news for Patriots fans. He had two years left on his contract (so really it extends him for an additional four), and it's very rare for the Patriots to extend a guy with 2 years left, which tells you what they think of him.

Love it!

Whatever the signing bonus is, it's not peanuts.

Only an $8MM signing bonus. Relatively speaking, that's peanuts.

Personally I think teams will game plan against Gronk and he won't put up near the stats as last year... although that will leave other weapons like Welker open to pick up the touches.

You can't win with a tight end. We had Tony Gonzalez for years and never won squat. You have to have a quarter - uh....oh, never mind.

He's a 6'7" beast with the wingspan of a giant condor. Faster than linebackers and far bigger than CBs, he's just very, very hard to deal with. You can say "game plan" for him, and sure, you can do some of that, but I don't think anyone was surprised by him last year after his absurd rookie season, and he still put up absurd numbers.

Besides, if they overcommit to stopping him, I'm sure Lloyd, Welker and Hernandez will be glad to get targetted.

If Ridley can fix the slight fumble problem, he represents a significant upgrade at RB over the steady but plodding BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

And Brady is the trigger man. Let's just say I'm not really worried about the Patriots performing well enough offensively, if the key parts stay healthy.

Love it!

I was wrong. It's a deal that takes him six years PAST the end of his current deal. He's basically udner the Patriots control through 2019.

I LOVE BILL BELICHICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 GIGGITY!

Quote:
With two years remaining on his rookie contract, tight end Rob Gronkowski agreed to a new deal with the Patriots on Friday, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

But why now? Here are some thoughts:

APPEAL FOR GRONKOWSKI
The former second-round pick was set to earn just $1.115 million in base salary over the next two seasons, plus minimal offseason workout bonuses and incentives. His new contract reportedly includes an $8 million signing bonus, which he will receive up-front. It's a large jump in short-term pay that is hard to pass up. By inking a deal now, he also gains some financial security in case of injury (he missed his final season at Arizona with a back injury) or decline in production before his rookie contract expires.

RISK FOR GRONKOWSKI
Gronkowski's extension is reportedly for an additional six years beyond the end of his rookie contract, and reportedly includes a $10 million option bonus the team can exercise in 2016. This essentially puts Gronkowski under the team's control through 2019, when he will be 31 years old. If Gronkowski continues at his record-setting pace, he may again be one of the league's more underpaid players by the latter half of his deal.

APPEAL FOR PATRIOTS
At first glance, this looks like a team-friendly deal that allows the Patriots to lock-up one of their young stars. While $18.17 million in guaranteed money is a lot to hand over to a player who has only been in the NFL for two seasons, it is likely significantly less than what Gronkowski would have commanded on the open market once his rookie deal expired in two years. They now have a centerpiece to their offense under their control for eight years at an affordable rate. This avoids a contract situation with Gronkowski looming next year, while also freeing up the franchise tag in 2014 to be used on another player.

RISK FOR PATRIOTS
While Gronkowski has remained healthy aside from the ankle injury he suffered in January, there have always been looming questions about his durability long-term. He slipped to the second-round in 2010 because of a back injury that limited him while in college, and if Gronkowski has that injury recur as his NFL career progresses, his productivity could take a major hit. In giving Gronkowski an extension with two years left on his deal, the Patriots also set a precedent where other high-performing but underpaid players on the team could use when asking for a new contract from the team.

Yes, it is. I didn't know that part when I posted.

Suffice to say that the deal seems to be one that reflects potential risks and rewards for both sides, per my prior post quoting one of the Pats beat writers who analyzed it under that approach. I think it captures it well.

That's an $8MM gamble you have to take. Hell, the Pats spent $7MM on Ocho/Haynesworth, so...

In reading the details, it appears that Gronkowski has an escape clause from Year Three on. If the number of porn actresses in the New England states drops below a ratio of 1:400 women, he can cancel the remainder of the contract and be traded to Miami or any new NFL teams in West Hollywood.

I read (on my phone) that there is only $18.17M guaranteed. That is a lot of other money on the table that he has to be able to play to earn.

It is funny, the article ends with a quote from his dad saying the money won't change him. He will still be "Rob the goofball."
