Gabbert going down bust avenue

So far, Gabbert doesn’t look ready for a leap

Posted by Evan Silva on August 1, 2012, 9:24 AM EDT

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reeling, and increasingly injured. And the new head coach has never even met the best player on the team. To be kind, the Jaguars’ season is off to a dysfunctional start.

There is a quick fix for all of this, though, and we’ve alluded to it before. And conveniently, the guy who can do it is already on the roster. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert can elevate the Jaguars’ 2012 performance if he takes a big leap in year two of his NFL career. Gabbert is the key to Jacksonville’s season.

According to ESPN.com AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky, however, Gabbert’s practice-field performance suggests he is not ready for that sophomore leap.

Kuharsky was in attendance for Tuesday’s practice, and wrote that Gabbert “didn’t look like a guy who’s made the big jump.” While Kuharsky guessed that Gabbert’s footwork has improved, the quarterback’s lingering accuracy woes were more noticeable.

“You watch it and don’t understand how it still happens,” Kuharsky wrote. “… I didn’t come away from this morning session feeling like he was much more effective than the last time I saw him.”

Accuracy and an utter lack of pocket composure were Gabbert’s primary downfalls during one of the worst rookie seasons by a quarterback in league history. It doesn’t sound like he’s corrected the accuracy flaw. We’ll know in Week One whether he’s overcome the pocket fear.

The Jaguars face Jared Allen’s Vikings in the season opener.

That's probably why they should have sat him for a year. Would it have made a huge difference? Maybe not. But you at least give him a chance to work with NFL level coaches and give him some time to get adjusted to the speed.

He wasn't really. It pissed me off how much worse he was than Chase Daniel.

I'm sure that Jaguars fans take comfort in the notion that their team at least tried, and wasted a first round pick on a QB.

I'm sure Jaguar fans are more worried that their star RB is holding out and their 1st round WR hasn't signed a contract yet.

Gabbart is one QB that makes Cassel looks like a HOF performer!

Many saw it coming from a mile away coming out of college that he was going to be a huge bust!

I'm sure the Ravens never recovered from Boller...the Chargers never recovered from Leaf...the...

good thing the Chiefs avoided that, look at all our success compared to theirs...we are obviously better off for not having drafting a QB for 30 years

shouldn't you stick to telling us about what a great QB Cassel is, you dumb ass?

I think it woulda made a difference. At least he woulda had a chance to learn before they broke him in half.

Gabbert may very well be a broken QB already. He was a deer in the headlights last season.

He had a big arm and that is about the best thing I could say about him. I did think he played tough as well.

He had the worst case of happy feet and no pocket pressence of any MU QB in recent history. He never seemed to make great reads and was not ready for the NFL last year for sure. Would not be shocked if he were out of the league in a couple of years. Good thing he got in before they nerfed the big money contracts for rookies.

I bet JAX cuts bait on Gabbert before we do on Cassel...

That's a fail on QB, receivers and coaching. You don't put your young QB, who admitted his confidence was shattered last year, in a position to fail so early in camp.

He hasn't been put in a good enough situation to win games, no. But there is no one to blame for how bad he was playing but himself.

Plenty of rookie QB's have been thrown into the fire on bad teams and NOT had the worst season for a starting QB in NFL history.
