Planetside is a REALLY addictive first person shooter..... on PC only right now MAYBE coming to SOny Playstaion eventually...

The battles are massive.....hundreds of people on the same battlefield. Combined arms, infantry, tanks, air, transport/supply vehicles.

Check this game out...lots of roles , not just grunt/infantry....You can really play engineers or medic or troop transport etc...squad leader.....pilot....gunner...bomber.....etc etc....





If you play on server "connery" as the NC (new conglomerate) I would be glad to squad up with you and show you a little of what I know. Its kind of a steep learning curve.....but it is REALLY fun once you learn to move around and find the "front lines" of the war and get into a squad....

3) check it out a little bit , go to the "VR" virtual reality center and try out all weapons and vehicles

4) try 'instant action' and try joining a few different squads

*If you hate the NC for some reason, I do have characters in the other factions (vanu & Terran) so I can hook up with you in those as well, theyre just not as advanced...I prefer NC but can play any of them as long as its Connery server.

I tried it out and man do i suck at it, seems like there isn't much skill, More like finding a good sniping/hiding spot.

Well...its all about situational and map awareness and also being with a group.....even if you are a lone wolf type, u need to find where a group is and kind of tag along and vulture with them...theres just too many enemy groups to take on alone...

Depending on the battle, u will need to know what your objective is, (defense or offense etc) and where youre trying to go...without that knowledge...youre really kind of lost.

Trying to play the game in a bubble or alone sucks until you know how to figure out where to go and what to do.

One of the biggest things is also figuring out what kind of role you like and then using your certs to make yourself AWESOME at this role... and saving up your cert points for this.

But keep in mind like some roles are highly situational.....depending on where you are...like there just might not BE any good sniping spots or sometimes your basic grunt outfit will not be good (large, open area outdoor vs vehicles etc....)

mainly if you like just regular combat, you need to find some spawn points with squads and other allied troops so you can get in there and mix it up with your semi - auto rifle etc...

Its all about finding the right spawn points...and the right squad/fight...and then spawning out as an effective role for that situation.

Practicing a couple hours in the VR to play with the different weapon systems and see how they fare against different targets is IMMENSELY helpful in figuring out what load-outs and classes are good for what situations.

you may want to just play with the VR a little TINY bit just to practice killing things, then do some combat out in the field a bit...do not worry about dying or killing AT ALL at 1st....simply see where the spawn points are....see where the different equipment terminals are...how bases are laid out...dont even worry about finding the right battle even.......just use 'instant action' and mess around and look around and explore....

Once you get a little more comfortable with your surroundings, the different bases, icons, etc....THEN spend some quality time in the VR choosing a weapon load out.

I'd be happy to join you in game in the VR and squad up with you etc any time to show you a couple things/basics and help you get around/figure out a couple load outs....

Heres an example of what I like to do:

spawn in to the game
1) find where the biggest battle is of the 3 continents (using the [m]ap button]

2) find a open pick up squad just to screw around, which is on the same continent as the big battle, near the good battle (using the squad icon on the [m]ap screen)

3) IF POSSIBLE use the "squad deploy" button on the (m)ap screen, to launch a drop pod to launch myself in an assault drop pod near the sqwuad I chose

3A) find another way to get to that squad * (theres lots of ways to get there, mainly using the map screen..or if you are a pilot, you can spawn an aircraft and fly there etc..set a personal waypoint...etc...)



4) once I am near the squad I try to determine what the situation is...if we are pushing forward or getting our shit pushed in.

5)if we are on offense my preference is to spawn a heavy tank, and roll out...(if available , depending on how many resource points I have and if the cooldown timer is up or not)

5A) if I cant spawn a heavy tank, I spawn a light tank usually or a MAX armor suit
5b) If I cant spawn a light tank or MAX armor suitI try to spawn a troop transport and drive friendly troops into the action

5c) If I cant do the above, (because I have no resources or my timers arent up) then I spawn an infantry unit, which costs no resources and has no timer.....you can spawn any of these for 'free' :

medic, engineer, infiltrator(sniper), light or heavy assault troop

Once I am spawning infantry units I just play infantry/support roles until one of my timers is up and spawn another tank or MAX etc.,...



Now of course if you are on defense its different...also if you like to fly aircraft then of course youd want to do that until you use all your resources or timers etc...


Dont worry too much about the details right now, just mainly focus on the big picture:

find the big fight

get in there!

learn your surroundings, figure out which way is toward the battle and which is away.....so you can take cover and know where to run

use the [v] key to call out for medic and ammo and repairs as needed! People see it on their map, and will run to you to help

use the [q] key when you spot an enemy to call them out and it places them on the radar for all your buddies to see

go to the VR after playing a wbit to check out all the weapon systems in detail without the chaos of combat around you!

Oh and dont worry about sucking....i suck worse than you GUARANTEED , so once you are up to speed on the basic things (spawning, getting around, preffered load outs , VR...etc...) you will be better than me...100%

Also another thing is engineer or medic is cool too so u can kindof follow others around and toss out ammo, while killing shit to get a feel for the game

To go to the VR training room:

1) go to your warpgate on any continent

(by pressing escape and hitting redeploy, you can always choose to spawn at your warpgate on the little green spawn icon)

2) once you spawn at your warpgate go to the little computer terminal with the globe icon

3) press E to log onto the globe terminal , then in the bottom left? should be a "Go to VR " icon

absolutely! no hurry, I've only been playing planetside for like 10 years LOL

I hope to maybe make a decent beginners guide and help CP members check this game out....

Its free, or you can support the game by buying different unlocks or gear...

But basically you can play as long as you want for free, so I think its a game EVERYONE with a PC should check out, as there is absolutely no risk...The thing is to REALLY check it out takes some time, maybe a couple of hours 2 or 3 times.....before you really start get a feel for what the game is like...just because it is harder than the other small-server , small scale shooters.

Its probably better you didn't play earlier.....the NC (my main faction) was getting our asses handed to us left and right , and completely out gunned , and zerg'd to death, outnumbered....and out-organized by the leaders too.

It was not a good day for the war if you were in the NC!

I actually wouldnt mind an hour or so in VR because I want to test some different scopes / optics on some rifles to see what I want to unlock

Oh another thing too, every 6 hours you can unlock a weapon system for 30 minutes to try things out in the field, before you unlock them with points.

so

1) try shit in VR, find what you like

2) trial it in the field for 30 minutes to make sure it works for you "live"

3) only then unlock the item with real points you earn in-game, because you can't undo unlocks.
