Chiefs Andy Reid tried to trade for Alex Smith 'multiple times' in the past - Page 2

Nate Taylor of the New York Times writes this piece, which includes some very interesting tidbits. You need to read the entire thing but here's what jumped out at me:

Reid: Starters will play more next week

1. Reid confirmed that he called the 49ers "multiple times" to try and trade for Alex Smith. We had heard this before, first from Trent Dilfer who labeled it a "courtship" at one point earlier, but this is the first time (as far as I know) that Reid has acknowledged it.

Just today I was talking with another media member about the game and I made note that I don't think enough people realize that Reid has wanted Smith for a while now, like he's been envisioning what he could do.

This little nugget of information makes me feel good about Reid's vision.

Also interesting: Is this why the price on Alex Smith was so high? A second round pick in 2013 and another high conditional pick in 2014. Because the 49ers knew that Reid had wanted him in the past? That sure would explain it.

2. Great quote from Alex Smith: "We'd love to stick it to everybody who thought we couldn't do it, he and I included." Alex Smith isn't the type of say anything controversial but he also doesn't give your stock answers. He puts some thought into it, which is why I like listening to him talk.

3. Reid goes over every play of every practice with the offense. He did not do that last year in Philly. That's part of this theme that Reid is back to coaching this year, and not worrying about the front office stuff.

If Alex Smith is indeed the answer, no issues with it. However, this whole thing is far to reminiscent of the pioli era, and thus wigs me out to some degree.

Depends on the definition of an answer. Super bowl this year? Super bowl in 3 years?

Well, I don't believe that the Chiefs are a super bowl contender this year, but I believe that within 3 years they could be. Especially if the defense comes around like I think it can. There is a lot of talent on the defense. There is a lot of talent on the offensive line, and at Tight end.....

Need to upgrade the wide receivers a little bit, and the secondary. but this is a very good team personnel wise already.

Reid and Dorsey both got a huge dose of the Ron Wolf QB school that I really really hope this is what we do. Draft a guy every year. Even just a 7th rounder who won't stick. Doesn't matter. I dont care if you have a legit franchise guy, if a QB who you believe has the goods is there, you draft him.
Of course youll stir shit if you have your guy and you use a 1st.
But 2nd and on?

It's no different than the way Carl Peterson has done for 20 years here either trading away picks for other teams throw away quarterback.

Reid's a smart guy. When it was time to move on from McNabb (a player he probably loved more than any other), he did it.

If Smith performs, he'll be here after next year. If he doesn't, he'll move on from him.

I think Reid is a loyal guy, but I also think Reid is a results guy. He's not Pioli who is going to keep trying something that's not working.

Because we have about 3 years of examples for Vick playing with Andy Reid and we have a 1 drive sample size with Smith?

Right now, there is nothing wrong with it. It's Week 1 of preseason football.

They melted down last year because of the dream team expectations.

Vick looked like an MVP candidate before they did.

I think it was a great move.

Pushed his lover boy McNabb right out the door when it looked like Vick was the better option.
Reid was constantly bringing in quarterbacks, and dumped his hand picked boy as soon as he saw somebody that might be able to do the job better.

That should be encouraging for you.

Actually, Reid dumped McNabb for Kolb. It looked for awhile that he made an incredibly dumb ****ing decision, then lucked out when Vick went electric in his first few starts since getting out of prison.
