Carl Nicks has staph infection in foot again

Buccaneers confirm G Carl Nicks has MRSA again

By FRED GOODALL – AP Sports Writer - Thursday, October 10, 2013 5:13 p.m. CDT
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks is being treated for a recurrence of the MRSA infection in his left foot.

Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said the team received confirmation Thursday that Nicks has MRSA again in the "same place, same location."

Nicks had already missed most of training camp while recovering from surgery on his left big toe when he was initially diagnosed with MRSA in late August. MRSA is a staph infection that is resistant to some antibiotics.

Nicks sat out the remainder of the preseason, then missed the first two games of the regular season
. He started the past two games against New England and Arizona.

A second player, kicker Lawrence Tynes, also was diagnosed with MRSA in August.

"From everything we've been told and understand, this does happen, which is why MRSA is a bacteria that's hard to treat," Dominik said of the recurrence.

"In talking with the infectious disease specialist who's been treating Carl and working with us, and working with other professionals," Dominik added, "he also confirms and believes strongly this is the same infection."

The initial cases were confirmed while the Bucs were in New England holding joint practices with the Patriots before a preseason game. The team hired a company to sanitize One Buc Place, the team's headquarters and training facility, on two separate occasions in an effort to minimize the prospect of other cases.

The Bucs said at the time they did not know where Nicks and Tynes were exposed to MRSA.

Nicks, who signed with the Bucs as a free agent in 2012, was an All-Pro two years ago with the New Orleans Saints. He was listed on Thursday's injury report as "limited" in practice for the second straight day.

Earlier Thursday, coach Greg Schiano said the sixth-year pro had a problem with his left foot, but declined to give specific details.

Tynes, who helped the New York Giants win a pair of Super Bowls, signed with the Bucs before training camp. He was sidelined by an ingrown toenail on his kicking foot when he was diagnosed as having MRSA.

The Bucs later placed Tynes on the non-football injury list

As if there weren't enough reasons for a player to look for a trade out of Tampa...

Right, it doesn't just go away. You can effectively treat it, though, to the point where you don't have an infection with vancomycin, but for vancomycin-resistant strains, there are only a few drugs that are effective (which is the scary part). Treatment is a long and drawn out process, though.

So your post is kind of misleading.

What are the side effects of a drug like that?

Antimicrobials are generally very safe. That doesn't mean they don't come without side effects, but vanco targets microbial structures that aren't found in mammals.

In rare cases they can be toxic to kidneys, as well as some other things, but like I said, they are generally safe.

Actually it does, as an infection. Roughly 30% of all people are carriers of staph aureus variations such as MRSA and show no symptoms, it tends to live in the nose, the underarms and the groin area.

When it leads to an infection it can be very difficult to treat, extremely stubborn but in most cases it is treatable and the infection can be eliminated. In the 60's, when antibiotic resistant staph first started to get really noticed, they found that infecting people with other staph strains, less aggressive strains, helped to actually prevent MRSA infection.

People who come down with MRSA infections sometimes have compromised immune function, meaning that a second bout with MRSA, a second infection of it, is that much more likely. For most people, MRSA is a very minor infection, you get a rash or a few bumps on your skin, and then it goes away on its own, for a few, it becomes a full blown disaster.

Its not enough just to clean the facility if the source happens to be a particular employee, that's how it often turns out in hospitals, the ultimate source of a MRSA outbreak is a perfectly healthy nurse, doctor, PA...etc.

Does the nurse or doctor have to be killed? How do you stop it if they're a carrier?

You don't stop it. It is an inherent part of our normal flora. The multidrug resistance came on in the last 30 years.

Prevention measures are extremely complicated and annoying, but necessary.
