Then again, read/write speeds on my Buffalo NAS are about 10x the read/write speeds of the USB ports on a high-end router. EDIT: I would still consider getting a single HDD enclosure vs. that. My Masscool has lasted 5 years and cost $19.99. I haven't heard of the brand you posted there. |

Doubt it. Unless you're pushing 10GbE.. Routers these days have USB 3.0 or eSATA which are far superior to 1GbE (though it's apples and oranges in terms of functionality, DAS is nice as a storage extension to your PC, NAS is a PC+storage you can access anywhere).

It's normal for smaller devices with only 1 fan to have only intake and then a grill for exhaust. Makes no sense the other way around.

This would be the second Sabrent enclosure I've had issues with. I've used Mapower, Masscool, and Rosewill with good results. Unfortunately, it appears that these enclosures are either OEM'd from the same company and white-labeled or these companies aren't actually separate companies. Here's my Sabrent and underneath it, a Rosewill I found on Amazon yesterday. |

So I ended up buying a new Rosewill enclosure, the one I posted the picture of below.
I just unboxed it and sure enough, the fan is EXACTLY backwards of the Sabrent. There's no way for the fan to rub on the drive because it's actually mounted with the spinning side behind a grill. I guess I should have gone with the Rosewill before. Despite the overall similarities, it's the subtle changes that make one brand more dependable than another. |

It could also be that Sabrent (or Rosewill or all of them) are copying/reverse-engineering each others designs.
Here's a Sabrent I just found on Amazon. Here's my Masscool enclosure I bought in 2009. |

Rosewill makes nothing. They only rebrand.

This arrived today. $19.88 on Amazon and was BY FAR the easiest HDD I've ever assembled. Remove one screw to crack the case, slide the drive in and secure it with a 2nd screw. Less than 2 minutes from box to backing up the NAS. We'll see how long it lasts. It has 2 fans, both pulling air inward, through the case, and out through vents in the back.

A petabyte NAS?
Of course you know I'm going to tell you that's overkill, right? That's awesome. |

It's from a demo of their new firmware, they clustered like 4x10 bay rackmounted NASs fully loaded

By the way, I found a router that can compete with SoC-based NAS' on I/O now. The new Netgear R7000 can read and write USB3.0 at over 25MB/s. Small Net Builder actually hit 40MBps in a couple of tests. Pretty impressive for a router. I'm getting one on Friday to play around with. |
