Late night bullshit: The dog next door.

So there's a dog next door that's chained up in my neighbor's shitty yard.

The chain is short, about 12 feet or so. And this dog is never unchained, even though the yard is fenced in.

We've had run-ins with this neighbor before. He seems a bit "off."

Ultimately he's met the only legal obligations necessary in Greene County (I checked): the dog has a doghouse, and it is regularly fed and watered.

But it is never, ever, EVER off that chain. Far as I can tell, he never takes it on walks, never socializes with it, and just leaves it outside all day every day with a 12 foot radius.

The logical conclusion here, of course, is to mind my own business. But this dog deserves some semblence of a life, and as you may already know about me, I have an irrational soft spot for dogs.

Question: What, if anything, should I do?

I've come up with several ideas for helping this neglected dog:

1. Steal the dog.

2. Offer to buy the dog from the neighbor, then offer it to a no-kill shelter.

3. Offer to take the dog on a walk every day.

4. Buy a chain extension and stealthily attach it to the dog's chain, so he has 10 extra feet to be a ****ing dog.

This is really frustrating for me. This dog lives a terrible existence where he has zero social interaction and next to no space for him to roam. Utter neglect of your pet is not illegal, but it's definitely immoral. But my options are drastically limited. (I do chuck it some treats over the fence when I walk by, every day.)

Any other ideas are welcome, including telling me to sit on a pear.

Do nothing. Unfortunately that may not be the pat your back and rub your shoulders type of answer you could be looking for. But it is the honest truth on what you should do. You have already said he is not in violation of any municipal code and have a soft spot towards animals. The only problem is you being a busy body neighbor.

Not everybody has the same values or moral code towards animals that you do. And just because they are not giving the dog what YOU feel is appropriate. Doesn't mean they are mistreating the dog. Just back off peering over the fence and instead throw the dog some treats from time to time.

Offer to take it for a walk so many times a week. If you talk to your neighbor in any way like chiefs planet........ Oh wait, horrible plan.

Hire SR to talk to your neighbor, you may even get paid to walk the dog two or three times a week.

You haven't indicated that you've had contact with dog. Does the dog like you or hate you? Maybe the neighbor keeps him chained up because it's a vicious dog and he's afraid for the neighborhood children.

1. As soon as you mention anything about the neighbors dog to the neighbor, than theft must be ruled out, b/c you become the prime suspect if anything happens to the dog. Someone who is a "bit off", may react a "bit off."

If I was in the situation, than I would gather intelligence. Find out as much as possible about the neighbor first. Maybe invite him/her over for beers/food. Maybe have a cute, female friend stop by a little later and say something like, "there is some poor chained up dog barking away out there..."

You shouldn't "offer" anything, instead you should try minding your own business. If the dog is fine, and no laws are being broken, just leave things alone. Hard to do but try to focus a "real" problem. For you that would be something like changing the Redskins name... Damn Direckshun, dont you get tired of telling others whats best for them? My advice would be to try option 3 first, and just talk to the person about it. If they get upset at you because you are offering to HELP than they are just a shitty person.
Although technically you are in another persons business, you are concerned for a LIFE.
If it was a little child chained ANYWHERE, you bet your ass the morons on this board would be all about taking action. Dogs are important to a lot of people too. There are many dogs on this earth that deserve to breath this oxygen moreso than a lot of shitty human beings.
