Cummins is the only thing right in a Dodge... I'd rather know I'll get at least 200,000 out of a Duramax with a rock solid Allison behind it than get a Cummins good for 300,000 but have to replace the trans 3 times.

What price and year range are you really looking at? It's largely stereotypes being thrown around here. The new dodge trannies are tough. Any mechanical cummins you find will be worn out. I had a duramax put 220k on it problem free literally outside of a wheel hub I didn't do a thing. Either way your looking at a good truck. If your comparing apples to apples a hemi in a 3/4 ton there's no comparison. The 6.2 vortexes a better gas heavy motor. Give us some more info.

Explain to my cousin's husband the stereotype of replacing the trans 3 times in his Dodge. Either way though, every maker has its problem children. GM isn't perfect either, but there are other advantages in my opinion, such as ride quality. Dodge puts on some great sales coming up soon, so you could get a hell of a good deal though.

I didn't tell him to go buy a 12valve... Just said that that I would have.

He didn't ask about a Chevy. He asked cummins or hemi. That's why hes getting the replies he is getting.

And I had a mechanical cummins at the shop last week that had less than 40000 on it. Multiple customers with under 100000.

They are out there

What year? The older trannies were trash however when Mercedes took over they implemented a few new toys. I worked as a Chrysler tech for 3 years before going back to heavy equipment. They've really beefed up since the early 2ks. I was actually talking to my neighbor about this a few days ago he's a level 5 cert Chrysler tranny guy. They've come along way from the old rattley leaky 12v backed by a half ton rated trans. I've been looking at 1 tons with my old man were looking to trade our f650 for a 1 ton. Personally I think we're going dmax.

My thought was to buy a 1 ton 2 or 3 years old but after looking around , anything with 30,000 miles or less is about the same as a new one so I'm thinking now to just go ahead and buy new. I need something that's gonna tow 20,000 + pounds. I have a F250 now with the 6.0 and it's HORRIBLE !

You will definitely want diesel than. You would be fine with going with any of the major brands these days though. The new 6.7 from ford is a good strong motor. The duramax is always a great motor. And those 2 have a huge advantage over being "faster" trucks than the cummins if your into that thing. The new cummins will tow anything you want but if you want to modify it and make it a fast truck it's not really for that. The trannies still aren't as good as the other 2 but if you just towing and take good care of it you most likely won't have any issues. The old 6.0 was the biggest pile that ford ever did. Most ford owners will admit that. The older 6.4 from the 08+'s was a good motor to. Me personally if i were doing diesel i would go with duramax. Not only is it a great powerful motor, but it gets good MPG, mods well, and you can't beat the allison tranny.

Chronology

Predecessor
6.2 and 6.5 L Detroit Diesel

The Duramax is a General Motors diesel engine family for light-and medium duty trucks, designed by Isuzu. The 6.6-liter Duramax is produced by DMAX, a joint venture between GM and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio. The Duramax block and heads are poured at The Defiance GM Powertrain foundry in Defiance, Ohio. This engine was initially installed in 2001 model year Chevy and GMC trucks and has been an option since then in pickups, vans, and medium-duty trucks. In 2006, production at Moraine was reportedly limited to approximately 200,000 engines per year.[1] On May 9, 2007, DMAX announced the production of the 1,000,000th Duramax V-8 diesel at its Moraine facility.[1]

I'm on my 3rd Turbo. Have replaced all the injectors twice. Both fuel pumps twice. EGR cooler twice. I figured out to leave the EGR unplugged and a lot of the problems go away but it's starting to act up again. I've absolutely had enough !
