The art house crowd likely hates the NFL but they aren't going to shell out money for a 'mainstream' Will Smith flick.

Seriously - who goes to see this movie? What's its target audience?

Exactly. Thought the denial comments were ironic.

The league was pretty aggressive in trying to cover the whole thing up. I mean, the negative effects could have pretty terrible consequences if middle aged guys have a **** about their favorite athletes long term health...

Jesus - even the marketing binge for this movie is irritating.

"The movie that has the NFL TERRIFIED"

No. No it does not. The movie isn't even showing some punchy ex-football player stumbling around. The movie is about the doctor that discovered the link between repeated brain injuries and CTE and how important it was for him to get the word out.

Christ. Please please please try to make a more boring movie. I dare you.

I'm not even predisposed against the movie - I don't care if the NFL has to eat shit; pro football will exist either way. I'm just flummoxed that the movie got made. It's target audience, whatever it may be, is a niche group. Its lead is clearly just doing some random Oscar bait (poorly, it appears) and its advertising just reeks of desperation.

This just looks like an odd choice to greenlight for a major studio. Then again, it's Sony pictures and they're...well they're stupid. So there's that.

i really dont see the point of you butthurt. it looks like typical oscarbait to me. People love the whole "one man against the odds to do what he knows is right" bullshit. Come Christmas, people will eat this shit up.

And from the Sony email leak, yes, the NFL had a great concern about how they look in this movie.

If you follow the news, Sony has been getting flack because they apparently didn't want to offend the NFL with this movie. This isn't going to be a movie that buries the NFL, at least if those emails are correct. They even mention working with the NFL to promote the movie. They wanted it to be a "man beats the odds" story, not a takedown of the NFL.

Terrified. No. Caught their attention? I'm sure. Movie's dominate the world more than the NFL could ever dream, in this day and age where everyone is paying attention to every story out there, something that makes the NFL look bad in anyway is probably not good for business. How long till we get a biopic about Junior Seau? Hollywood will make this boring script to you and make it a movie that, barring bad reviews plastered everywhere and on Rotten Tomatoes, people will see and form their own opinion from the information in this movie. The average person who is in the middle will generally flock to one side or the other depending on what their friends, news outlets, and family think. I wouldn't write this movie off, but there are many NFL fans who can see past the glitz and drama of Hollywood to consider this a good movie at best, not a gripping look into the dark side of the NFL and their concussion protocol.

I still think that it will be a technological breakthrough in safety equipment that allows the head trauma fears to subside and football to continue to flourish.

**With the $$ the NFL has this breakthrough might not even be as effective as the studies show, but they will be able champion it as though it does for 15 years or so.

I'm betting helmets end up with a soft exterior like those dumb Don Beebe helmet shells, only the helmet will actually be made of similar stuff as those shells were.
