Pro Bowl FS Reggie Nelson Still Available

Yeah, he's up there in age, but he tied with Marcus Peters for most INTs last year and made the Pro Bowl. No sign of slowing down. I suspect that he'd love playing with Eric Berry and Marcus Peters. Hell of a secondary. Time to kick the tires on a proven veteran leader that's still playing at a Pro Bowl level?

Interceptions - 8
Tackles - 52
Assisted Tackles - 25
Combined Tackles - 77

(Karmic twist: He recently said, “I love playing for KC.” when talking about DB coach, Kevin
Coyle.)

http://www.endzonescore.com/reggie-n...vailable/37087

The Cincinnati Bengals have, shockingly, allowed veteran free safety Reggie Nelson to remain on the free agent market for nearly three weeks now. Considering Nelson is coming off of a career year in which he led the NFL in interceptions, it is even more shocking that a team in need of a safety has not scooped him up.

The Bengals made the wise decision to re-sign young strong safety George Iloka very early in the free agent signing period, but 32-year-old Nelson still has a lot left in the tank.

The Bengals are definitely deep at defensive back, but Nelson provides a veteran presence that cannot be found just anywhere. He was a defensive captain for the Bengals this past season and was a certified ball hawk in the secondary from start to finish.

Several teams have been linked to Nelson, mostly because it is hard not to link a team to a star player who recently made the Pro Bowl, but the Bengals are surely still talking with him. It remains to be seen whether anything substantial will come of those talks, as the Bengals have been engaged in heavy discussions with other free agents this past week. However, they would be foolish to play a game of cat and mouse with Nelson.

Not only would it be extremely disrespectful to a player who has worn the Cincy stripes with pride for six seasons now, but it would also be too risky. There is no way that Reggie Nelson will remain unsigned for much longer, so the Bengals must make it a priority to bring him back to Cincinnati as soon as possible.

Ron Parker is a younger version of Nelson. Fast single high type safety who makes plays all over the field.

Sure he hasn't had 8 INTs ever, but neither had Nelson at Parker's current age.

Would rather address the position with a younger and cheaper option.

This would be a great 1-2 year signing...

Parker is 28. He's had 6 INTs in the last 3 yrs. Nelson had 14 during that span. More than double. (Nelson had 5 INTs his first year.) Save money? KC has a small window to leverage their aging stars. Good option to compensate for the loss of Smith... if Nelson isn't out to break the bank.

Smith and now Abdullah leaves things in a bit of a mess, I'm down for this player if we can afford him... we dont want to be counting on a bunch of rookies back there

I would agree. It's not that I want to save money. But doesn't make sense to me to spend on three starters at safety.

I'd rather have a value as a third safety option. If we have money to spend id rather that be on a depth corner.

It doesn't really compensate for Smith because it's a safety, which we have already lost 2 of those this offseason alone. Would prefer to draft both positions if Nelson is going to cost more than a few million, and he will.

Maybe this is why? The Bengals have never cared about character but other teams do:

On Sept. 30th 2007, a car driven by Justin Glass with passengers Corey Smith and Randall Cason was approached by two individuals one of whom opened fire on the car. Smith received a gunshot wound to the back of his head and was in a coma for two days while Glass was shot in the arm. Cason who was unhurt in the incident initially identified Reggie Nelson as the man accompanying the shooter, identified as Aaron Hernandez.[13] Cason later rescinded his identification of Aaron Hernandez as the shooter and Reggie Nelson as the accomplice. No charges from this incident were ever brought against either Hernandez or Nelson.

I'd love it if we replaced Husain Abderka with this guy...

It helps fortify the secondary and that does help to compensate for the departure of Smith. Nobody said it completely compensates for his absence. Nelson is a known quantity. Having 2 premiere safeties makes the secondary and the entire defense better. It would be negligent for the Chiefs not to kick the tires. Salary cap is the only money issue unless your name is Clark Hunt.

Good find, but that was 9 years ago. And he was never arrested or convicted of anything. If there haven't been any issues before or since that, it shouldn't be a deal breaker for the Chiefs.
