Weber goes Kamado sorta with the Summit Grill

http://www.weber.com/weber-nation/bl...inally-arrived

Love this want bad but pricey but all still so cracking isn't an issue like the green egg. To be fair the egg has a lifetime warranty. Westlake is a official reseller in my area I'm tempted to stop and have a look.

Yeah before Id bite I need some reviews from actual users. The BGE forum i check in on has several owners of eggs that have the weber on order. It will be interesting what they have to say. Those guys bleed green but for some reason this has them excited. I know the complaint with egg owners with the large egg is 2 packers is a tight squeeze and most buy flats for brisket unless you get the XL. The large egg and placesetter diffuser you can get for 799.00 with makes the entry summit around 1000.00 the proper price point maybe Weber do not see it that way but to me unless it gets out of this world reviews is overpriced.

I question what you're paying for at that price point. Just can't see the value.

This is like when New Coke came out to taste more like Pepsi. They were admitting their competition was better.

I'll stay with my egg.

How do you figure?

This is Weber admitting they aren't in the market at all.

When Mercedes brought out the C Class, it wasn't them admitting Toyota made a better mid-sized entry level sedan with the Camry or even that BMW made a better one with the 3-series. It was them admitting they weren't in the segment at all and it was time to get in there and try to take away some of that market share. If Mercedes felt it couldn't compete in that segment, why spend that kind of money developing an obvious loss-leader? Hell, reverse it and look at Toyota or Honda's luxury divisions (Lexus and Acura); those guys absolutely knew they could run with the big dog Germans and make a product just as viable, so they developed those divisions and they've been extremely profitable and successful.

If Weber scrapped all other models as Coke did with their old formula, then your analogy might have some merit. But as it turns out, the old Weber One Touch Series (old Coke in your horrifically strained reach) is still around and just as old Coke has a massive share of the market in its own right and mantains that market share to this day, Weber's good ol' bulletproof kettle grills will continue to be outstanding and the class of their particular market.

BGE unquestionably has the "first-mover advantage" in this market and it will require that Weber fight uphill in the segment. But if the engineering is sound, there's no reason why this can't do a great deal many things better than the BGE.

All of that should give you far steadier temperatures and thus better cooks as the proteins don't have to take on the temperature spikes. They appear to have put quite a bit of engineering into the radiant heat plate as well; sure looks like they've got it dialed in for 225 pretty easily and at 24'' (vs. the big WSM at 22''), the capacity should be as good or even better.

As for the grilling aspect, the adjustable great should allow you a lot more flexibility in searing, etc...

I dunno...it almost looks to me like it would replace the Performer and the WSM while doing both jobs BETTER than the specialty item. It's counter-intuitive, but it's also a much better engineered piece of equipment than either of those.

Still more than I'm gonna spend because in the end, barbecue chicken is barbecue chicken, despite what Myron Mixon (and Stewie) will tell you. For 95% of the things I make, I don't expect this would make a difference.

But still, when some distant relative of mine dies and leaves me money that I had otherwise not expected, I'm buying one of these and I'll salute dear old Aunt Dorris (Ed. note: I do not have an Aunt Dorris) every time I fire it up...
Thing is, the WSM will hold 8 hours at 225-240 very easily as long as you use the minion method (down burn), and I could by 5 of them for the price of that damn thing. It's cool, but waaaaaay over priced IMO

But with only 2.5 cups of charcoal, does that really count as the minion method?

The minion method is essentially designed to throw a big ol' mass of charcoal at the problem and let it burn through. 2.5 cups of charcoal (per Weber) probably isn't even enough to fill a chimney.

Dumping an unlit chimney full of charcoal in the grill and then lighting the top of it kinda adheres to the rule rather than the spirit of the minion method, does it not?

But again, I agree with you regarding the price. Then again, I've always said the same thing about the BGE - I just don't see the utility in that thing.

FWIW, Nebraska Furniture Mart sells this thing for $1499.

I'll stick with my WSM.

I think that's for the one without the table.

Most people recognize that it won't sell for the MSRP but Weber also has a mandatory minimum price they'll allow retailers to sell things at (it's why you can never find a WSM on sale). Evidently it's $1499 for the stand-alone and $1999 for the model with the table.

Ah, you're right. I'm not sure the table is worth $500. Way too much money when there are other smokers that do the job just as well.
