Student Faces 70 Charges for Photo Prank

Authorities in Arizona said Tuesday a high school football player was arrested after learning the teen had exposed himself in a team picture for the school’s yearbook.

Mesa police said Hunter Osborn, 19, was dared by a teammate to expose his penis when the team photo was taken on the school bleachers. The photo was put into the Red Mountain High School yearbook and the team program.

Authorities said the yearbook was given out to students and faculty before school officials were aware of the graphic photo.

Osborn, who was 18 at the time the photo was taken, faces 69 counts of indecent exposure based on the students and staff who were present at the time the picture was taken. Mesa Police Department spokesman Steve Berry told The Arizona Republic Osborn faces one other count of furnishing harmful items to minors.

“The district is dismayed by the actions of the students involved in the photograph. Their behavior does not reflect the values of Red Mountain High School or Mesa Public Schools,” Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman Helen Hollands said in a statement.

Hollands said the yearbook has been recalled to edit the photo.

Osborn was ordered to wear an ankle monitoring device, according to Fox 10 Phoenix. He's due in court for a preliminary hearing on May 20.

A petition has surfaced on Change.org, demanding that the teacher overseeing the yearbook be fired.

“(Osborn) didn't put the picture in the yearbook, he didn't create the page, he wasn't the editor that approved it, or the teacher responsible for publishing it and distributing it to students,” the petition reads. “The teacher responsible for the yearbook should be fired.”

As of early Wednesday, the petition had more than 2,000 signatures.

It's like the NFL. It became a point of emphasis. Because so many kids have cell phones now they also have cameras that they can carry around with them wherever they go, and the ability to share pictures and videos almost instantly. So there have been so many explicit photos/videos of minors being passed around as well as minors being exposed to them that judges started slapping kids with ridiculous punishments when they got caught. And any school official that gets in the way of the process gets slapped down hard. It's not like the practice is new. Instant cameras have been around for a looooong time. But the ubiquity (and advanced utility) of cell phones was sort of a tipping point.

But the letter of the law is that he is adult exposing himself to minors.

I agree it's no big deal but again, this is the legal system needing busy work

My source - a close friend who has two daughters in his class and has the yearbook open in front of him - says you can't even see anything. Unless you really really try to see it. Word got out about the prank, a parent called the school, and by law the school must report it to the police. But the Principle didn't want anything to do with this fiasco. But was compelled by law to contact the police.

So I take back my condemnation of the school.

As I said earlier, I have an inside guy. He's an ex teacher at the school, has two daughters attending now and now works in education for the State of AZ. And he's posting his views of it in a public forum, visited by his peers, and not worried about any repercussions. School has spoken with the offended parents and agreed to no charges.

I remember kids getting a warning or maybe a day suspension for depantsing someone in middle or high school.

Today that would be a 90 day term I think.
