Basically, the Saints had 8 seconds left on the clock prior to half - enough time to take one shot at the end zone, then kick the field goal. The 49ers corners all intentionally held the Saints receivers. 5 yard penalty, but it prevented any shot at all of the end zone, and 4 seconds ran off the clock. The Saints were forced to kick the field goal.

John harbaugh and the ravens rather than taking the punt deep from their own end zone, intentionally took a safety but they had their players all commit holds while the punter ran around in the end zone to burn extra time off the clock. Very clever.
