The All -22 and yeah, it all happened again

This team is done most likely. It's done and Reid is the captain of the Titanic hitting the ice burg except the first one didn't do the job so he hit 5 more.

They do everything they can to give more blockers than they should have to.
The extra O-linemen last week were brought in on rushing plays.

Due to teams prioritizing the run and daring the passing game to make plays that they clearly aren't going to make, KC needs extra beef to block the 8 and 9 man fronts.

Which they wouldn't need if the QB would do something to back them off before the last 4 minutes of the goddamn game.

Alex is really starting to put pressure on himself and Andy to make the change. One more of these performances this weekend might do it.

The OL thing is a myth. Not that they're bad but that they are so much to blame for Alexs qb play. Ive said this before. I'm perfectly happy to take beginning of the year Alex Smith or end of 2013 Alex Smith. I was even complimentary of middle of last year Alex Smith. Quite simply, when Alex gets it in his head that he can take over games, he is a different qb. He throws in tight windows, throws on the run, and throws deep. In the last few games of 2013, against decent defenses, Alex went on a tear. And that ol was a million times shittier than it is now. We played that year with Stephenson at LT, rookie Eric fisher at RT, and piles of shit in the middle. That OL looked fine.

When Alex opens up the offense, the pass protection improves. This is all on him. We've seen he's capable of doing it. But he just refuses to. And at this point in the career, we have to accept that those aggressive versions of Alex are way in the minority, not the majority.

But worst of all, you can defend Alex Smith while acknowledging the last 5 games he's mostly played like complete dogshit. Even you I think see that. But there are so many people who are apologizing for him and refuse to acknowledge his contribution to the problem. Keep in mind that these same people defended Matt cassel for almost every game he was qb.
Well as you suggest in that final paragraph.. I have and do concede that his play has disappointed me.

Beyond that, we'd be arguing more over "the last 5 games".. as at that point.. it becomes simply levels of disappointment. The PIT, NYG, and DAL games were the most troublesome for me.. and in that order. It is these 3 games that disappoint me most.

The problem I am having is this. I have always felt that Smith is enough at QB, if he has a strong roster around him.

I see the tale of two 5 game splits.

The first half, the offense was competent.. and against some quality opponents. Alex responded very well. Better than most would have dared hope for.

The second half, the offense as a team was pretty lousy. Poor run blocks, poor pass pro when opponents pinned ears back, bleh playcalls. Alex responded poorly.

The 2 things that stand out most are:

- a run game and pass pro that went from best in the first half to bottom tier in the second half.
- the returned hesitation of Alex as he deals with unfamiliar, young WRs.

Was anyone really under the illusion that Alex Smith would thrive with this current offensive support?

Maybe Patrick Mahomes really is the answer. Alex is what he is.. a QB that plays well when his supporting cast does. Since that is not happening, he is what he is.. a product of the play around him.. and not a QB that can lift up the misery surrounding him.

If he keeps playing bad obviously it will be up to Reid to make the switch but I don't foresee that happening. Smitty is better than that and his numbers for the year prove that. QBs have bad games/stretches during the year. This is common.
His performance the last 5 weeks is much more representative of his last 5 years. This better play you speak of is definitely in the minority. That play works when your defense is top 10 in points and best in the league at forcing turnovers. What we are seeing is what this game management thing looks like without the defense doing those things.

Alex doesn't play great with a few bad stretches. Alex plays mediocre with a few small excellent stretches. You have that reversed. I am fine with Smith during those stretches. I have no delusions he can string together 3 to 4 of these games together consecutively in a playoff run.

Keep an eye out for the hash marks. I'll be interested in seeing if that article at arrowheadpride is right about Smith not using 1/3 of the field. What's the weather gonna be like on Sunday?

It's a combination of many things snowballing. All fingers shouldn't point to Alex Smith although he's the QB, and he's a main focus of the problem.

I think the biggest problem on offense right now is the Chiefs inability to gain good yardage on 1st down. This team is almost always 2nd n long. Esp in the running game. Run plays on first down have been ineffective to say the least. If you're 2nd n short it opens of the playbook to many different options and keeps the defense guessing. The Chiefs are essentially wasting downs on offense. If they improved on first down their drives would be extended more and would have more of a chance to get into the endzone.

This isn't a powerful mauling OL that pushes people off the ball. They're a finesse pussy line thats good at misdirections, offtackles etc. Bottom line is Chiefs are getting their asses kicked in this area. And really on both sides of the ball they're getting their dicks kicked in, in the trenches. Where is Parker Ehinger? Not that he's a world saver like some on here tend to believe but wtf has he been? Is he STILL injured? wtf is the deal there?

Playcalling is atrocious and Alex Smith is going back to his old Alex Smith aka Cpt Checkdown ways. With the Chiefs woes in the running game if they can't fix that then AS has to advance the chains w/ his legs. Need to get about 50-60yds rushing out of the guy per game. That's roughly 12-15yds a qtr, that's not hard, but what it will do is help move the chains. This offense evolves around it's running game, and right now the running game is non-existent. They're certainly not getting any big chunks of yards in the running game. 1 yd here, 2 yds there, the running game isn't moving the chains at all, and again it sucks on 1st down. And in the passing game, Smith is missing people wide open downfield again. Chiefs miss Maclin. I'm still 100% behind his release given his contact. It was just a bad contact to begin with, and he wasn't producing unfortunately like he is this year. But the Chiefs could use him this season. I'm not totally convinced losing Conley was really any significant blow to the offense. Conley to me is JAG. Wilson is now back, but you're not going to anyone around the league say "Hey Wilson is healthy, KC is back!" He's just a small role player. And really that's all the Chiefs have at WR. Hill is still learning the position and really to me, shouldn't be a #1WR, and probably wouldn't be if the Chiefs had better options. And I get he's a HR threat on the field, but I also think many are expecting too much of him this early on. Hill doesn't have any help at WR. He has Kelce I guess, but no true help on the other side.

Reid really needs to get his head out of his ass too. Someone should take his playcalling sheet, headset and escort him to the locker room with 5min left before each half of each game. He's a ****ing cancer during crunch time. The clock always kicks his ass. It's the most maddening thing I've seen w/ a football coach, these guys are paid shit tons of money and they really do some stupid shit. 1min left, down by 3 80yds to go, 1 timeout left...and you run the clock out to end the half? Whos god damn genius idea was that? Running on 2nd n long almost always pisses me off, esp if you're trailing in the game. No excuse for that either. Over-utilizing trick plays and getting cute inside the redzone, esp not being able to punch the ****er in, inside the 5yd line, is also maddening. Alex Smith saying **** it lets take the FG is god damn frustrating as well. Instead of trying to execute how to be cute on offense, they should focus developing a game plan that gets them chunks of yardage. Not these little 2-3yd passes into the flat. Those are essentially wasted passing possessions. The Chiefs are literally wasting possessions on offense.

I actually don't think the OL is much of a problem in the passing game. The Philly game gave the OL some problems but KC still won and that was probably the best DL they've seen all year.

This IS the norm. Yes, he can play better sometimes. But if you look at his entire career, Giants game Alex Smith is the norm, and Patriots game Alex Smith is the outlier.

He's a great qb for the 2-14 Chiefs. But now he's at his plateau, and it's not good enough. If you're content with 9-10 wins first round playoff losses, he's your man.

I wish the best for Alex Smith. He will be a great asset for some team. He'd be tremendous for a team like Cleveland that needs stability in the worst kind of way. Trade him for one of Clevelands 1000 picks. Use the $16 m on some players and the 2nd or 3rd rounder on s good player. This is a deal great for all parties except delusional Alex lovers. Unfortunately Ill have to put up with some cringeworthy play until then but excited that I think the end of the Alex era is almost here.
