I’ve had the last 4 ASUS boards fail, with one DOA from Amazon.
No more. Gigabyte for me. |

The reason I am building one is because I never have built one from the ground up and I figured the mobo was ground zero. I have updated software, added drives, memory, wipe clean the PC of friends whose PC would barely boot due to all the trash on them, but never did a complete build.
Maybe a better question would be: What mobo and processor would be a good starting point. Would it be better to start with a new case? If so, are there combos that can be purchased as such, etc. Just looking for a good place to start I guess. I will look into Parts Picker. |

Plan to use for everyday surfing, office apps, watching stocks, No fancy graphics for gaming, graphic work, CAD, etc. Just want to build one from ground up with SSD for boot and apps. Hard drive for photos, music, etc. As you said earlier, I do not want to go with old technology but nothing extravagant. Five hundred dollar range do it??

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GFq3VY Just threw this together. Micro ATX, small form factor, SSD, HDD plenty of processing power for what you want to do, but there are tons of ways you could go. This build assumes you have monitor keyboard mouse and a windows key. If you dont, Windows keys run about 40 bucks. Mouse and keyboard can be had for 20, plus craigslist you a monitor |

1 stick of 8GB RAM is like $14 more than I paid for my 16GB 4 years ago.

Another strong build. Ryzen this time, (i know you said intel but **** it) and more performance. Have to use discreet graphics but i went with a silent 10 series base card. A few more bucks, i really like this one. For the processor price, you get twice as many cores and about 50% more multi core performance, as well as the same single core power, plus you at least get a GPU thats stronger than the intel integrated one. |
