Come here to get assigned to relive one year of your life.

Hypothetical: you're in New Orleans and you go to that little square where all of the palm readers hang out. You find the most attractive palm reader in the group and pay her $20 so she'll hold your hand for a few minutes.

She deftly palms your $20, then has you hold out your hand. When you do, her dark Romany eyes go wide and she gasps. She begins calling out in Armenian or Creole, you're not sure which, and other palm readers converge on you. Everyone looks at your palms and begins muttering oaths and prayers.

She asks for another $20 to tell you something special, and you give it to her. She then explains that your life line has a loop, which means that you can go back and relive one year of your life, with a specific set of rules.

She asks for another $20 to explain the rules, and you comply. She then tells you that you...

1. can relive a year, beginning and ending on your birthday,
2. make any different decisions you want, and basically have free will.
3. maintain your current personality and knowledge when you go back.

However,

3. at the end of the year, any debts you accrued will be carried forth for payment in the present day.
4. you cannot gamble or invest money or otherwise financially benefit from your knowledge of the future.
5. at the end of the year, you'll come back to the present and there will be no changes or ramifications to your decisions except those noted in other rules.
6. you can't pick the year. It'll get randomly selected for you, with the most likely year being 18 but every year having a probability of being selected.

For another $20, she'll tell you the incantation to say, and you'll go back.

If you're interested, post in this thread with your current age, and I'll assign you a year to relive. Let us know what you might do differently, and whether it would be an enjoyable year to relive.

24 would put me at 2000/2001

I had graduated from College in 1999 and was working my first job as Internet Technical Support in Lafayette Indiana (Purdue) making $8.50/hour.

I got laid off by the boss coming down the isle saying, "everyone go into the meeting room". In there, the higher ups was like, "we're closing up shop, today is your last day and there's no severance".

I was so green in I/T, I'm not sure I'd know any better to do things over. That job built my confidence as up until then I had insecurity issues when it came to IT in corporate America.

I had gotten engaged that Xmas. I told my fiance at the time (now wife) that I'd come back home (to KC) and get things started for us as she had to finish the semester at Purdue. She was there on post-graduate Chemistry program.

A couple of weeks earlier I'd gotten a call from HR seasonal in KC. I declined their $11.25/hr offer for seasonal work because I was in love and it would've put us long distance. So I called them back up and asked if the offer was still on the table and YES... They needed bodies.

THE WORST fuggin job of my life! They literally NEEDED BODIES. Long as you could type, you're hired. They just needed call takers. I'd come and go as I pleased while looking for jobs. Finally got a HIT! The "boss" tried giving me a talk about not showing up, etc. I told him to just bear with me as...

Sprint called me back. Longer story short, I got the job after an interview Feb, 2001. Mom's was disappointed in me only getting hired on for $25K/year. However, I was ambitious and just needed an "in". That $25K/year quickly became $47K/year in 2-3 years. Since this is my 24th year of existence, I'll keep it to within that time frame. Within 4 months, I was promoted to level II making $28K/year.

That's also the year I was sitting at the command center as a Level II technician when someone came by and said, "Someone flew a plane into the WTC". I thought nothing of it until they said another plane hit the other building. The company instructed all of us to stay off of our phones in order to free up bandwidth.

In summation, I really don't think I'd change anything as that year laid the critical foundation to where I'm at today. I'd probably put everything I had in AAPL but you said we can't use the years for financial gain. Hope this didn't disappoint.

Hmm, running it for myself, I would relive the age of 15, which is the end of my freshman year of high school and the beginning of my sophomore year.

I can immediately think of one different decision that I would make, though it's probably too late. I had a crush on a girl in my geometry class, and she struggled in the class. I should have offered to help her, but I didn't. This time I would, and presumably would reap the benefits of doing so.

I'd probably rebel against my parents and try out for the football team, too. I'm not sure I'd do anything else different, mostly because I didn't have a lot of freedom.

Oh, and I wouldn't put the milk shake on the dash of the car when driving home that one time.

C'mon, man. Roll the dice. You get a no-cost mulligan on a year. What's your age?

So no changes on your end, apparently. Would it be fun to go back and relive this year? It sounds like there was an equal amount of trauma and triumph.

Age 27 for you. Hopefully that gets you past your high school traumas. Good year, bad year, what would you try differently?

Well damn.

I remember I had just moved to Harrisonville when I was 7. At 8 I met a bunch (not really) of new friends at school and enjoyed kickball.

I don't think I'd change a thing! If I could be 8 years old with the knowledge I have now and personality I'd be pwning teachers in the classroom with my sweet multiplication and division talents as well as writing.

I'd be in the "Another hot teacher caught having sex with a student" thread as an 8 year old.

(8 was a hard one to think about)

Edit: Ok I would definitely hang out with my grandma upstairs more often rather than playing Nintendo in the basement. I'd change that.

Good point. When I was 15, I had the most attractive teacher of my life in Algebra II. Maybe I should've asked her for private lessons.

It really wasn't a bad year. In hindsight, that year taught me so much about myself. I'd eventually get laid off from Sprint after 7 years. and then laid off from HP after that after 3 years. Both times I didn't flinch as I knew what to expect and knew I'd be ok. I viewed the layoffs as "challenge time" and came out on top both times.

So it really was a good year. I'm a glass if half full person.

Right there with you. I guess my life hasn't been good enough to take that gamble.

However, if I could pick the year, I'd choose May 22 of 1997-1998. I would be reliving age 14. I could change a lot. Possibly save my parents marriage which in turn would save their business which in turn would save their house, wealth, happiness and everything else that was lost. Which in turn would change everything that happened for myself and my brother. Or at least I would try. Maybe things wouldn't have changed even if I tried my hardest. Who knows. Otherwise it was a pretty rad year.
