I was thinking around the shore but the article talked about how people drown because it's so hard to turn yourself perpendicular to the surface of the water. If it's that hard to get yourself vertical it could be quite a show.

Okay, tell me if I'm messing this up. I'm calculating Bwana's buoyancy.

First, we look at the bricks.

The density of the Dead Sea is 1240 kg/m3.
The density of bricks are 1900 kg/m3.

So we know that the bricks are weighing him down, but essentially 2/3 of the weight will be supported by the water.

40 pounds of bricks = 18.2 kg.

If I want to do the math right, 18.2 kg of bricks takes up 0.009569378
m3. The buoyancy of the water will therefore support 0.009569378 m3
*1240 kg/m3, or 11.87 kg. The downward force is of course 18.2 kg, so the bricks are effectively a downward weight of 6.32 kg.

Now we look at Bwana's body. If we assume that he's 190 pounds as an estimate, and we see that the typical human body has a density of 985 kg/m3, then his body will have a volume of 0.087678819 m3. Running the numbers, his body is less dense than the water, so it'll have an upward force (buoyancy) of roughly 22.4 kg.

If my calculations are correct, Bwana will still float easily while wearing 40 pounds of bricks. In fact, he'll be closer to neutral buoyancy, which I think will make him more maneuverable. I've got to go with Bwana on this one.

I was just gonna post how dead Bwana is and then this post. I barely know what it means, but I trust Rainman to do math, so... Sorry FMB.

This is what I'd do. Retreat until Bwana tires and sinks.

Sorry about that. My curiosity got the best of me. In an effort to remain neutral, I'll observe that you will be far more buoyant without the bricks.

After a 6 mile run, you'll float alright. If the 6 mile run doesn't kill you off, Bwana will be waiting for you.

I envision Bwana having a hidden side piece or Bowie knife, so that adds to his advantage.

Are they in a location that is deep enough that they can't reach the bottom?

The backpack should rotate Bwana so he is face up, I think he may actually have an easier time keeping his face above the water.

Contestants are screened before each match to ensure that they are not bringing in outside weaponry or snacks.
