I've never been sold on him, but if we think Houston won't hold up, this is the smart move.

I don't think the Chiefs will ever give him a big contract, unless it is that type of contract which allow you to release the player after two years or something like that.

By the time he will have played on the franchise tag, he will be 28 years old and I dont think Veach at that point would give him a long term contract with big money guaranteed.

I think this situation is different, those guys were always productive. Ford looks like your classic late bloomer, it'd really suck to have him leave and watch him throw up 5-7 years of great play for another team after he was developed here.

Much like a Brandon Graham in Philadelphia.

If we knew that he would stay healthy for idk, 80+% of a new extension, I’d sign him today. Injuries are my only concern.

Can't we tag him twice and then transition or something? Isn't that what the Steelers have been doing to Bell?

I don’t see tagging him more than once. If he’s worth a 2nd tag that would put his cap hit north of $20M probably, just extend him or tag and trade.

We don’t need a headache like Bell gave Pittsburgh

And then we'd get a comp when he walks, right? Say he plays on tage and continues to be dominant... Since he was a 1st rounder would we not get a 1-2? He'd be 29 after tags so we'd essentially be trading a guy for a decent pick who'd be more or less past his prime.

If you tag him it’s for one year and then let him walk. Don’t tag him a year then sign him to a big deal when he’s a year older

Probably this.

Although there is a scenario where I might still extend him. If you know that Houston is gone after 2019 and you don’t like any of the edge rushers behind those two heading into 2020, you may have to extend him.

No, cause right now they probably don’t trust his long term health and they likely believe in Speaks enough that they see him as a future starter.
