Umpire recovering after being punched in the face at kids’ softball game

LAUREL, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) – An umpire in Mississippi is recovering after being punched in the face following a softball game for 12-year-old children.

According to WLBT, Kristie Moore was filling in for an umpire who got sick. She has been calling games for 10 years.

During the game, the coach asked one of the athlete’s mothers to leave the game for excessive cursing. Instead of going home, the woman is accused of waiting to confront Moore after the game, punching her and then running away.

The mother, Kiara Thomas, was arrested and charged with simple assault.

Moore said some parents are out of control and make it harder and harder for umpires to do their jobs.

“It’s ridiculous,” she said. “The verbal abuse. And even now, the physical abuse now, at this point, and enough is enough.”

Moore, who finds umpires for tournaments in Mississippi, said it is difficult to find people willing to officiate the games.

“No one wants to listen to the verbal abuse and run the risk of what happened to me happening to them,” Moore explained.

Moore said most umpires do the job because they love the game and the kids, not for the money as they get paid $40 a game at most.

It looks like she's got good power in her punch, but not nearly as much as a Frenchman on a bike.

As if I needed another reason to dislike Frenchmen.

I’d like to say this is unusual, but in my experience it’s not. I officiate girls Lacrosse and what you hear is not only frightening for the official, but embarrassing for the child. Some of it is human nature, protecting your child, but some of it is simply not knowing the rules. A girl gets a legal, but hard check…and here comes the WTF ref?, make the f’n call ref, and on and on. You could give a coach a yellow, but that probably adds to it. Then you look over at the young lady and your heart breaks when you see her cringing because of mom and/or dad.

To be fair, however, I’ve also seen parents come up to me after a game and ask questions about a call, or why I sent their kid to the sidelines for 2 minutes (had a young lady last night that was sat for dangerous play after being called twice before on illegal checks and picks). The last one was a check to the head. Dad didn’t know the rule, shared with him what occurred and explained the results. He thanked me and we went on our ways.

My son recently began playing rugby. One thing I've noticed watching games is nobody ever, and I mean EVER gives the officials any kind of a hard time. It's something they reinforce as being somewhat sacred, at least in our region as far as I can tell. Pretty refreshing. I feel like even mild mannered baseball situations there is constant chirping about this strike/ball being called, etc. (I'm guilty of it, too.) That shit has got to be really grading if your an ump out there just trying to do a good job, as I suspect most are.

Bet she isn't married either.

There is a reason why youth leagues are having a hard time finding refs. Parents are out of control.

I umped some right out of high school. No way I'd let my kid do it these days. We are about to the point they need a police officer on duty at these things but sadly there is even a shortage of guys willing to do that job anymore.
