Most PKs aren't taken perfectly, and are stoppable. The key is trying to read the PK taker to see if you can get a clue as to which way he's going, and then make a decision, all done in a split second.

I know, man. What I'm saying is that the pressure is on the taker and not the keeper. Goalkeepers are not crushed for life after not saving a PK. Ask Roberto Baggio what he he thinks about the 1994 World Cup.

I won't go as far as saying the best team always wins in a sudden death/no shootout game, but it's sure as hell a lot closer to it than ending with a gimmick.

It would only be equivalent to a FT shooting contest if another person were allowed to guard you while you shot a FT . . .

And that wouldn't be a very good way to finish a basketball game, either.

The one thing you are missing are the (2) 15 min extra time (OT). In that way, each team has 30 minutes of chances to win AND if it is still tied, they BOTH get (5) PK shots. In the NFL, coin flip, march 30-40 yds, FG -> game over. There is around a 50% chance the other team never touches the ball again. That is insane and I have always hated it.

Reminds me when denise was arguing against PKs with me way back when. I don't think people realize how hard it is to play for 120 minutes.

Umm, you do realize that it is much, much easier to score in basketball than it is in soccer, right? Ditto for football. The only games that can hypothetically go forever are the ones where dudes aren't running around for 90 ****ing minutes, i.e. baseball.
