To Amazon Prime or NOT to Amazon Prime

Sorry if Q, but I'm on the fence about doing the whole Amazon Prime thing. Seems like getting rid of Netflix all but pays for it, but wanted to ask the opinions of others in this Mecca of awesome knowledge called Chiefs Planet..

Is Amazon Prime really worth it over eBay when you buy, let's say, 5-7 items a month? I ask because I always do the "price+shipping" deal, so it seem like it's a wash at some level. That being said, "Prime" would ALWAYS mean two-day shipping, and that's something I hardly ever do on eBay, so it could be a deal that makes it worth it enough to buy 15-20 things a month. The whole "eliminating some of the instant gratification culture/concern" deal...

Oh, and I've heard that if you use an "edu" account it's free for six months (perhaps not a big deal over a lifetime!!), but is then like half the cost. Does anybody know if that's true? If so, and it' the son who has the "edu" account, how does "Dad" pull off that scam without having the kid able to buy pretty-much anything he's ever wanted?

Thanks in advance... Just looking for some opinions before I leap...

For certain circumstances they will, but it usually costs an arm and a leg (so obviously not something Amazon's gonna pay for in most cases).

I've had FedEx deliver Saturdays quite a few times, but never seen it from UPS.

Until taxes are applied to the Interwebs and Prime offers 2-day shipping (and I'm smart enough to read the whole thing!!!), then Amazon is my shopping meth!

Sorry, all too often I can be out shopping and see something, check it on the Amazon App, and buy it right then and there. If I can wait, it's worth it.

I struggle with taking business away from some locals, but I try to help makeup for that with services. So when I need my car worked on, it's into a Mon-and-Pop shop (or one that's not a national chain). And I'd like to send some business JasonsAuto's way, but don't need anything right now.

But alas, until it's not a huge-awesome deal, I'm all-in on Amazon and eBay.

If Amazon is a threat to a mom & pop shop, then mom & pop need to join the wonderful world of the internet. I'd think it's one of the best things that's ever happened to small businesses.

Either that, or Gen-X/Millennials need to change their tastes and prefer personal service and interaction over convenience.

You're right, because my generation is clearly doing well and not loaded with debt and in a horrible job market where we can afford to pay more at mom and pop stores for the same items.

I play in a men's golf league and it's amazing how charged that argument becomes when broached.

I agree, but I think a lot of Mom and Pop shops really think the store front is everything (and I think there's a lot of merit in that actually), but I also think they need to burn-through the "learning and understanding technology" part and treat it like Mom and Pop shops did when electricity and phones came around.

One of the best examples of the argument coming to an end was when one of the 50+ Mom and Pop shop people told the more resistant guy that he "sucked it up, took some classes at the local community college, and was up and running in six months." I'm a network person so I wanted to stay out of it and get back to golfing, but I sort of grinned.

The odd part wasn't that the guy had to learn the Internet (he said "that was easy"!!!), but he said he "had to learn how to pack and ship shit, and that sucked balls; but now he's not racist because his UPS guy is black." I was like, "Waaaaa? Did you not ever get stuff shipped to you before you created your web presence?" I ****ing broke out laughing when he said, "evidently once you start doing a lot of business with UPS they start sending their guy who has his A-game going on, and where he is that guy is black." It was awesome! Liek all days golfing, it was great...

So, businesses need to adapt or hope an entire generation/culture changes.

A couple of times I've gone to stores before buying the product on Amazon, does that count?

Well, that happens at all levels (resistance to change, not racism)... huge companies with relatively limitless resources have gotten left behind due to stubbornness to change. And what mom & pop lack in resources, at least they have the chance to more quickly react to change if they choose to.

Never truer words spoken.. One reason BODs need to never have too much protocol, and NEVER not have 1-2 fully vested members who are under 30...

It only counts if you scanned the barcode to Amazon and ordered from your phone while still in the store...

**** mom and pop. Mom and pop can't buy things any cheaper than I can, so I'm paying for what? Stupid conversation and the inconvenience of having to drive over there?
