What's your favorite wine?

For us wine drinkers, I'm curious about your favorite "drinking" wine (as in, something uner $15 a bottle).

I'm partial to the 2002 Hill of Gold Shiraz (Rosemont Estates) and the 2002 Coppola Premium Claret. Right now, I'm drinking a 2003 Coppola Zin.

Also has a nototriously high alcohol content iircc.

Yeah, over 15 percent. Didn't notice that at first.

Wine Enthusiast's review:

No doubt Michael-David is going for a certain style with Earthquake, describing it as “over the top and shattering to the veins.” Indeed. This Lodi Zin will knock your socks and several other pieces of clothing off with its smoky, greasy, hot and sweet berry pie flavors, with a side of bacon to boot. True to its style, this is one very big boy.

Every time I come out to KC I buy a case of Kenwood Merlot in LA before leaving, that's my favorite. Spicy, full taste, cherry body and not sweet, but pepper.

Also, they have a Merlot Reserve that is smoother, but is twice the price. Good stuff though.

I also like Wente, Kunde and Coppola wines too. The Coppola Director's cut Cab Savignon is a good one.

So I wanted to understand wine better... picked up "Great Wine Made Simple: Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier" on the Kindle and have been reading. Really, really good so far. I've been reading ahead, but need to set up my first in-home "tasting" to build up what the author calls the Wine Drinker's Toolbox - basically terminology and understanding of the big six grape varietals.

First tasting is six bottles from a list she presents: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Syrah/Shiraz. Tasting is for basic flavor and aroma of the individual grapes in comparison to the other varietals and body.

And I picked up a couple more bottles of the Earthquake - the zinfandel and the cab.

There are so many good wines now it is hard to pick one. Murphy Good Liars dice comes to mind. Most of the stuff I really like in that price range you could never get so it doesn't matter.

For an everyday type drinker Apothic Red is very good and on sale at Sam's Club for $8.50 and most liquor stores for around $13.

My favorite "nice" wine is a the Duckhorn Merlot.

A few of my old fave wineries have changed hands in the past couple of years - you might want to keep an eye peeled for 'em by their new nomenclature. Patrick Campbell - this fellow makes some very good wine for the money - try any of his stuff, I've never had a bad one. Current list of wines -

http://www.tierradivinavineyards.com/wines/

The name of the winery here has stayed the same, but he's changed a few of the labels. Recommened CMS Red and White - and anything fancier that you can afford - that Red Mountain stuff is awesome, if you've won the lottery:

http://www.hedgesfamilyestate.com/wi...rent#cms_white

Bonny Doon sold off a lot of his labels, he still makes Vin Gris de Cigare - a bone dry 'pink' wine that knocks my socks off. $12-$15, just don't ignore all pink wines because there's oceans of flabby 'white zin' out there.

https://www.bonnydoonvineyard.com/

One of the wines that Bonny Doon sold off recently is my current fave box wine - a really tasty, aromatic white 'summer sipper'. At this price, it might become your favorite too. On sale around town for $13/3L - tasty wine @ $3.25/750? Don't let 'em know it's out of the box, they sell this in 750 bottles for $10, just keep refilling that empty if you want to impress the ladies with your profligate ways:

I have two that I am enjoying right now.

Margerum Klickitat Pinot Gris, it is a bit sweeter than I normally drink but it is fantastic with spicy food.

Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir 2010, A good medium body Pinot great with steaks.
