Gruden did so in his QB camp that year that he'd take Carr, much like he said he'd take Mahomes last year. Gonna be interesting with these 2 slugging it out for the next decade.

It will be. A good QB rivalry is what the AFC needs.

Yeah, Mark Davis has been begging Gruden for years to return but I think Gruden was waiting for us to have a young, successful quarterback. He broadcasted enough games to know you need a stud QB to win in this league

The mistake Gruden is making is bringing in all these old vets, this is how the game has changed since he left and it has more to do with the salary cap than anything else.

I mean I love DJ, and I realize they are not paying him dick, but you have to be eveloping and playing young players in this league otherwise you are going to be passed by.

I have my concerns but right now I think it is a culture strategy with Gruden. I am only expecting a 9-7 season.

Thats probably wise.

Look, I think McKinkinze is a horrible GM. Any idiot would have drafted Carr and Mack where they did. Once Gruden adapts to the new ways of the league he will be fine as long as he has a QB like Carr.

Carr is fine, the first post is a really bad take. Christian Hackenberg is an interesting prospect though. #1 QB recruit coming out of high school, and as a true freshman did some great things under Bill O'Brien.

I always got the impression that Jon Gruden liked Hackenberg a lot from his episode of QB camp. Eludes to the fact that the coaching change at Penn State and the change of Hackenberg's fundamentals are probably a lot of the reason he struggled in every other year beside his true freshman year. A conditional 7th for a QB that Gruden can try to resurrect to be at the very least be a decent backup is what this move is.

I think Gruden deserves criticism for a lot of the moves the Raiders have made throughout this off season but I have a hard time criticizing buying low on Hackenberg.

I think Grudens a good in-game coach but a poor GM and it looks like hes got both those roles. I think hes trying to get things stabilized initially. Get players who understand the assignments and reads and get everyone on the same page. Sort of a temporary bandaid. They get a lot of dumb penalties, WR running the wrong routes, etc. Guys like DJ and Jordy Nelson will help with that, but it wont make them contenders. They need more talent before they should be taken seriously. I think they have enough on O for Gruden to work with. Basically good O, shitty D. I see them around .500.

If Jack Del Dummy and Todd "What is Play Action" Dowling can coach the team to 6 wins, Gruden, at least, should be .500 in my humble opinion. Plus, we have a real defensive coach now since Norton was fired.

Like I said 9-7. Anything else is gravy.

Gruden raved about Hackenberg on his show. Then again, Gruden loved every quarterback. I am not a fan of Hack but I can't really complain about a conditional 7th round pick. I prefer Manuel as the backup because of his experience but Hackenberg is worth a hack.

I think McKenzie is above average mostly because he handles the cap well. We are not locked into any awful contracts. I agree on Mack. Disagree with Carr. A lot of teams passed up on him but McKenzie, outside of Carr, has been terrible at second round selections.

In Carr, Gruden finally has a young stud to work with. Gannon and Johnson were old. Simms lost his spleen and no one else had Carr's physical gifts.

I expect some adaptation pains.

DJ and Bruce Irvin are just vets/temp place holders there to teach the young guns good work ethic. Honestly, it appears he is building from scratch and Como brought up a good point: Carr is not the QB he wants long term.

He can lose 12 games this year and he keeps his job for several more years
