1) It's not just about money. If it was, he'd have his name in the Tennessee discussion. 2) If Painter leaves his alma mater to come to Missouri, there are very few programs left to worry about: UNC, Duke, Indiana (though this is Brad Stevens' if Crean leaves), NBA.

But from the perspective of a KSU guy, who had a university president and AD who were so overly concerned with getting "A KSU guy" or a guy who would be "in for the long haul", I watched them hire two of the worst possible candidates and then waited twenty years for NCAA tourney victory after being out of the tourney for 12 years. |

Matt Painter > Mike Anderson
This would be a great offseason for MU if this happens!

Finally, Painter's wife is from southern Illinois, and may want to be closer to home. Painter knows the area well from his time at SIU, so it's not like he's leaving and going to USC or something. |

Update from DeArmond. Mizzou and Painter are now reportedly talking seriously. A Purdue source now indicates Painter leaving is a real possibility. |

St. Louis Post Dispatch is also reporting that Painter has been contacted by Mizzou.

There are a lot of reasons for Painter to consider the move.
Painter would be getting more money, at an AD that would embrace/worship him, in a better recruiting situation, with lower entrance requirements, in a single-school/state situation, with better facilities. Considering he has a frosty relationship with his athletic director, who also is notoriously cheap, I really feel good about the chances this actually happens.

Painter is finally going to get paid by Purdue. The talk with MU is only going to bring up his value there.
Cuonzo Martin is the most realistic candidate for this job, and should be hired by MU. He can take the IU job after Crean gets ridden out on a rail. |

But even if Painter doesn't come, Martin is not the next guy in line.

Keady wants Painter to stay, but ... by VAHE GREGORIAN | Posted: Sunday, March 27, 2011 1:17 pm | No Former Purdue coach Gene Keady said Sunday that he hasn't spoken with protege Matt Painter about any interest Painter might have in Missouri, which sources say has targeted Painter as its No. 1 choice to replace Mike Anderson. Naturally, any thought of Painter leaving didn't greatly appeal to Keady, whom Painter succeeded. "I'm the one who picked him here, so I don't want him to leave," Keady said, laughing. But as a Kansas State graduate who has known former Tiger coach Norm Stewart well over the years, Keady is well-familiar with Mizzou, believes it's a strong job and also said he would ultimately want what's best for Painter. "Nothing against Missouri, but there would have to be some big pluses before I'd encourage him," Keady said, adding that if he were persuaded the situation was better for Painter he would advise accordingly. "It's an interesting scenario; I want what's best for Matt and Jerri," Painter's wife. Some have speculated that word of an interest from Painter has been leaked for leverage at Purdue, but Keady said, "He's not the type of guy" to do that. Painter is known as a strong recruiter, a trait Keady attributed to his honesty, integrity and enthusiasm. "He'd be a great hire if they can get him," Keady said. Keady wasn't certain Painter would call him to discuss the matter, but he said, "We don't hold much back." |

Can Purdue pay what Mizzou is apparently willing to offer?
I have my doubts... |
