Per Pete Grathoff
Billy Butler says "I'm definitely a Royal at heart," but all other teams in MLB are an option now for him now that he's a free agent |

I know some will say you should trade the reliever while the value is high, but the Royals would have to get equivalent MLB value back in return, and I'm just not sure any major league team will offer that. KC plans to contend next year, and to give up Holland, they'd need someone they could plug into RF or DH right away. Just don't know there's a team willing to do that.

Billy is a 1st baseman in his mind, I figured he'd want to explore other options.

Only #Royals with a better career BA than @BillyButlerKC's .295 are George Brett & Mike Sweeney (min. 2K PA).

"Billy's been a huge part of our success, and we're going to stay engaged with him and do everything we can to bring him back," Moore said.

For a playoff-contending team I believe this is the correct decision. Great relief pitchers are very overrated by teams that are either mediocre or losing.

Just public comments, I think. From what I hear, Butler has already asked about working out a renegotiated deal and been shot down. Probably one of the reasons he was so emotional during the fan event when he was talking about his time in the organization...

I don't think they have been shot down. Butler is willing to take a hometown discount to stay here. He doesn't want to leave. And quite possibly he might come back.

It stinks in a way because you finally have a guy who wants to take less money to actually be a Royal, and we don't want him. But he'd have to improve his production, even if we sign him for 5-6 million a year. I worry he'll go somewhere like Baltimore cheap and pop a bunch of homers in that bandbox and everyone will be like "See!"
It's obvious this team wants to turn the DH into a platoon position, and has for a couple years. But they need to find 2-3 more bats if they're going to do that. |

Yeah, you're right. We really just don't need Billy Butler. Even if we platoon him and use him as a bench bat, we're talking about 200-300 AB's, tops. Is that worth $5M? I doubt it.
