Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Why would we be happy about trading for a retread QB, shipping out Albert, and pissing away the number one pick on Steve Jerkel?

Didn't say be happy, but to bail before a game is even played is ridiculous. I am not ecstatic about Smith, but I am willing to watch it play out. Apparently this regime feels better about him than the second coming of Unitas that this place has anointed Geno Smith as being. They also don't want to pay Albert more than he is worth and can't trade out of the #1 pick because no one wants it, so they need to replace Albert. It seems like a crap ton of teams don't agree with paying Albert what he feels he is worth. It looks like only Miami and (rumored Arizona) are even slightly interested. That says a good deal about Albert and his actual worth vs. what he thinks he is worth.

I don't do mocks.

I just recognize stupid shit.

Alex Smith, Sean Smith, Luke Joeckel...pretty sure it's stupid shit, not changing my opinion until on the field results prove it isn't.

Ya, bc they are at this point falling on their sword in handling Albert and creating a weak need that will be poorly addressed with the top pick. Some of that is outside of their control due to the draft class. That, said- I'm critical of their game plan on this but I'm not ready to write them off, and I certainly feel more comfortable with these guys over Romeo and Scotty manning the helm.

Its of course as usual, the Chiefs are not only 1 year too late but this class has very poor offerings in terms of true top 5 guys that teams would be scrambbling to jump up for the chance to draft.

I'll be happy to be an idiot if that means Reid turns Alex Smith into a top 10 QB and they draft an OT that's an All Pro and pick another Pro Bowler with the 2nd they get for Albert if that's the case.

I couldn't be happier if I was dead wrong and that turns out to be the case.

What are they supposed to do again? Take the QB that many feel isn't even a top 20 talent in this draft?

This I agree with. Had there been a Luck or RGIII or sure fire #1 out there and they passed it would be one thing, but there isn't. This place has become a Geno or bust place regardless of what literally everyone is saying about him. I expect Alex Smith to be a stop gap while we mentor the QB we draft, much like what GB did with Rodgers (where Dorsey conveniently came from). In this era you don't draft a QB #1 overall and bench him for two years. Now had we traded for Smith and then signed him long term that would be a different story. He is currently playing on a 2 year deal which is plenty of time for Reid to mentor our QBOTF.

Not according to the experts on CP. They have this guy pegged as Unitas incarnate.
