2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

Again seriously it would be cool to have one of ours in the derby but it would make me nervous. I've lived and died with the Royals for 43 years and I'm tired of dying for the last 27. I'm being pessimistic... forgive me.

Yeah that's great. Not on the big league roster.

He'll get here. Letting him season isn't a bad thing for the time being.

Moose seems the most logical choice. Butler could make us proud too as could Hosmer but I'd rather not encourage Hosmer to swing for the fences too much while he's getting his act together. Frenchy.... give me a break. I love Frenchy but he'll be the first guy to ever strike out in a home run derby.

Well those are the guys people have heard of. Outside of KC no one has a clue who Mike Moustakas is yet.

If we have one it should be Billy. He is leading the team in HRs for one and secondly he is the only one I trust not to mess up his swing as a result.

Another good point. The kids may try a little too hard while Billy is a vet.

If Gordon wasn't having such a strange year (and in many ways a poor year offensively), he would likely be the best option because of the natural loft in his swing.

So here's something I'm trying to figure ... how fast does Kyle Zimmer move?
He's going to extended ST to finish rehabbing his hamstring, then to Idaho Falls. If he's healthy, how fast does he move? I could see him having a short stint in Idaho Falls and then moving to Wilmington. An advanced college pitcher, when healthy, should make short work of the mostly HS rookies you'll see in Idaho falls. The question then becomes... Kane County or Wilmington? If he's healthy and looks dominant at Idaho Falls, I'd stump for moving him straight to Wilmington. Here's why: 1) It's a pitchers' park 2) Kane County/Midwest League are probably a step below the West Coast baseball Zimmer played. If he's healthy and dominant at Idaho Falls, he should be ready for the bigger challenges in Wilmington 3) If he gets to Wilmington by say, August 1, that gives him a full month to get acclimated there. Which helps you move him quickly next season. If Zimmer can get through AA next year, it puts him into a midseason-2014 arrival window (he'd be 22). Which could and should be a nice shot in the arm for a team that I expect to be contending for a playoff spot.

I heard someone on the radio yesterday say he would likely be expected up around 2014, maybe with a cup of coffee at the end of 2013.

Just saw Greinke is the probable starter for Tuesday's game at the K. That would be a good one to see in person. Tons of Royal Greinke jerseys probably.
