Owners of Toyota Cars in Rebellion Over Accidents Caused by Sudden acceleration.

Owners of Toyota Cars in Rebellion Over Series of Accidents Caused by Sudden Acceleration

Anyone else been following this story? They had a pretty graphic show on nightline about it last night.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Runawa...ory?id=8980479

Refusing to accept the explanation of Toyota and the federal government, hundreds of Toyota owners are in rebellion after a series of accidents caused by what they call "runaway cars."

Share
Department of Transportation: underlying defect causes accelerators to stick.

More PhotosSafety analysts found an estimated 2000 cases in which owners of Toyota cars including Camry, Prius and Lexus, reported that their cars surged without warning up to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE OF THE RUNAWAY TOYOTAS STORY.

Toyota says the incidents are caused by floor mats becoming stuck under gas pedals, but owners say that's not what happened to them.

Watch the full report tonight on 'World News with Charles Gibson' and 'Nightline'.

"I'm absolutely certain that in my situation, it was not the floor mats," Elizabeth James told ABC News. She was driving her Toyota Prius outside Denver, CO when she says it suddenly shot up to 90 miles an hour, even though her foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal.

"I kept going faster and faster," James said. "And all of a sudden… my foot was pressing on the brake super, super hard and I wasn't slowing down."

James and some other Toyota owners suspect the accidents have been caused by some kind of glitch in the electronic computer system used in Toyotas that controls the throttle.

Turning of the ignition is a bad thing, as it locks the steering wheel, but I don't think it is possible on these cars anyway.

I'd like to suggest the name of the next Toyota model:

Christine.

If your accelerator sticks you just need to Ctrl+alt+del.

This is the sort of issue that can arise when a company expands too quickly and lessens oversight on parts suppliers - not to mention the best Toyota cars in terms of reliability were always made in Japan. I'll continue to drive my bulletproof '94 Camry without a worry.

Interesting video here about what to do if this happens to you, although he's wrong about the steering locking if you turn the key too far, all cars today have an interlock that prevents the switch from going into the lock position unless it's in Park.

I was watching the Laker's game tonight and saw a Lexus commercial that I thought was pretty funny considering the sticky gas pedal recall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuD8-OUCRe8

I wonder how many people don't realize that Lexus cars are Toyotas with a different emblem on them

A few years ago I had a Camry that had cruise control put on after market. It was installed by Toyota but the installer was apparently not very good at the installation. The cruise would run fine then it would run full speed.

I used the afore mentioned turn the key off method to keep from wiping myself out along with my family. I would turn the car off and coast until I got down to 25 or so. I turned the key back on and got up to about 80 and repeated the process until I got to a stop sign. It was a 5 speed so to get away from the stop sign I had to clutch then start with an immediate release of the clutch. Who would have thought you could smoke the tires in any Toyota of the day?

The fix didn't work until they reinstalled the cruise from scratch, apparently one of the cables was too short and the guy spliced it, the splice caused the problem. Toyota would never admit they caused the problem, but they didn't charge for the fix.

Oh my God that commercial is Hilarilous ina completely unintended way.

Funny too that they haven't recalled any of the Lexus vehicles when there have been complaints of the Lexus having the same issue.

Toyota knew about the issue with the Prius brakes but didn't bother to tell their customers until the government forced them to.

http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/04/auto...dex.htm?hpt=T2

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Toyota has known about brake problems in its popular Prius cars for some time, going so far as to fix it in new production vehicles, but has kept Prius drivers in the dark about the problem until the Japanese government called for an investigation.

Prius hybrid cars coming off Toyota's assembly line in Japan have had an improved version of the software used to control the cars' brakes since January.
