He did a nice job.

So did Haith and so did Hoiberg. It's not as though picking either of them ahead of Self is some travesty to the right-thinking world, as Wickedlock is suggesting.

I'd give it to Haith because I think he's neck and neck with the other 2 AND he did it after having to change everything on the fly due to losing Bowers. From a raw coaching standpoint, I think he did the best job.

Then I'd give it to Hoiberg because I think his team took on his gritty personality and won some games they had no business winning.

Self comes in 3rd for a championship season where his roster suggests he had more raw talent at his disposal than anyone else in the conference. Those 3 are the clear separation and I see nothing to suggest that Self has a headlock on this thing.

KK now believes that Mizzou is a program equivalent with Missouri State, and should only play KU in Lawrence.

Plus...Haith is 3-1 versus the other coaches in question. Haith won the "head to head" match up among the group.

The narrative around this KU team has just become laughable. As though they're some squad full of plucky upstarts and scrubs; that only Bill Self could have seen and unlocked their potential. It's only the National player of the year surrounded by 4 and 5 star recruits that didn't play until this season. Your worst starter is probably Eli Johnson and he was only a 5-star and the #4 ranked PG in the country.

Your worst starter was literally a higher ranked player than anyone on Mizzou (save maybe Pressey) or anyone on Iowa State not named Royce White. And I'm supposed to fall all over myself to praise Bill Self for not letting them piss down their legs.

There are maybe 3 or 4 teams in all of CBB that have more raw talent on them than KU and I'm supposed to get all weepy for Bill Self because he doesn't have his usual roster that goes 7-deep with blue-chippers.

Cry me a ****ing river.
I'm a KU fan, I don't cry. Never had a reason to.

I just think it's hilarious that Self respected Haith enough to vote him #1 when everyone knows these two teams are by far the two best in the league. And Haith is continuing to cry about KU.

I don't care if Self has better players than Hoiberg. Recruiting is at least 50% part of the job.

But I admit I have to hold back here because I don't know for sure who Haith voted for. I don't know where that posted list came from.

KK is pulling out all of the stops to be sure.

Mizzou has no presence in KC...KK says so, so it must be true.

They lost over 60 ppg from last year, and since that team couldn't beat VCU, I don't see why KU fans would have high expectations going into the season. Thomas Robinson was 6th in PPG and 2nd in rebounds on the team last year, and despite KU's success this year, they're like 295th in the country in bench points. I don't think he deserves COY over Hoiberg, but I don't see how it's unreasonable to mention his name.

The hyperbole is entertaining though... whiny bunch today.

He recruited them this year? It was a single season award, right?

He recruited them in preparation for a year like this. He should be credited with that, yes.

Recruiting is at least 50% part of the job.
The tradition of Kansas basketball gets the other 50% ? Self is a damn fine coach, but:

Kids don't go to Missouri for their tremendous basketball program and it's history. They go because they can't get into KU, Duke, NC, etc. These schools will always have the upper hand in recruiting, no matter who the coaches are.

What Self did with his cast of The best player in college basketball and remaining 4-5star recruits was as expected. What Haith did with his last minute lineup was outstanding.

COTY is a great award for your coach to get. It means your team is having a very good year. But at the end of the day, who really cares? I want a final four.....I could care less about COTY compared to that.

Three coaches in the BIG XII did a great job with their teams this year. And guess what...all three got a piece of the COTY honors. Hoiberg and Self split the coaches award, and Haith got the AP COTY award for the Big XII. Everybody wins, and everyone can claim their guy was COTY.
