The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Yes all $9.8M definitely counts on teh cap, but there is no more compensation discussion. BA is property of KC Chiefs, just like any player under contract. This is why the had to have permission to give a physical and negotiate long term contract. If he were still the unsigned FP they could do whatever they wanted, and only if they offered him a contract would the match or else come into play.

EDIT: Hmm, when multiple others are telling me i'm wrong, perhaps i'm wrong here. Is this new aspect of CBA? I've always thought once the contract is signed, it no longer matters if it's a long term or the 1 year franchise deal.

If KC can't trade back 3 times and acquire a 2014 pick plus multiple 1sts, 2nds and 3rds like I did a dozen times on that draft pick game, I will be sorely disappointed with Reid and Dorsey.

but albert still is consider a franchise player and counts as KC's only franchise guy

Miami already has a franchise guy and can't add another so they can't add Albert unless they sign him to a regular contract.

I expect we could get out of #1 if we truly wanted to do so, would just have to take a small ransom at this point. I'd still do it personally, but I'm not in charge.
