Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

With the new draft schedule it gives teams time to finalize trades such as this between the first and 2nd round.

Personally I'm so disgusted by this stupidity that I hope we just pass the pick till round 2 and pick then. I'd rather do that than pick Jeckel or Fisher.

not sure how it works

I'm pretty sure they have to agree to a new contract with Albert BEFORE finalizing the trade.

Contract talks could break down with Albert in the final hour and then Miami would end up with 2 franchise players.

can't have 2 tags so a new contract must happen at the same time as a trade

What do you mean by "pissing away of 1.1". You mean by not reaching like Pioli did with Tyson Jackson and instead taking the consensus BPA (after considering positional value), Joeckel or Fisher?

i'm pretty sure that i'm correct in this

teams can only have 1 franchise tag player
That player is on a 'franchise tag' contract until they sign a long term deal

so i assume that if a player is traded while on 1-year franchise tag deal they still are considered a 'tagged' player with their new team.

Since Miami has one already the MUST sign Albert to a new deal before finalizing the trade.

I'm sure they already have an agreement that has been agreed to (Miami and Albert).

It's rather funny: reading other teams' message boards, they're near unanimous on how good Joeckel is. But reading this board? We seem to hate him. It's a huge contrast. Very weird.

It doesn't have to be agreed to. They can grant permission without a trade in place. And I don't recall him saying that it did have to be in place. I think he was speaking more logically, like "Well, they wouldn't give permission to talk to his agent without the trade being agreed to".

But sure they could. If you're trying to get a player to see that other teams won't pay what he's asking either, that's exactly what you'd do. Isn't that what you hope is happening, and that Dorsey isn't really serious about trading him?

But with all due respect to TBG, no one else anywhere has said the trade has been agreed to.

Being willing to pay him and "have agreed to a long term deal" are two different things.

Also, the guy (Ian Rapoport) reporting that Miami is willing to pay Albert is being contradicted by everyone else reporting on the story, all of whom say Albert is asking for too much money.

And Rapoport is saying the trade hasn't gone through because KC hasn't agreed to the compensation. So your two examples cancel each other out. They can't both be right.

There's no way they would agree to a trade, let Miami work out a contract with Albert, and then just not announce it because they're hoping for something better. If you're hoping for something better, you don't agree to a trade.

There's also no way Miami works out a trade for Albert, works out a contract, KC doesn't pull the trigger on it, and then Miami suddenly realizes that their staff has A&M connections and, holy shit, we've been working out this trade for Albert and we really should have been working a trade for Joeckel.

I mean, come on.

^ This. I think they are trying to call our bluff. Trading from #12 to #2 or #3 will cost them far less than trading up to #1 especially considering KC knows they are desperate. Miami needs a LT but neither BA, or any LT in this draft is the O-lineman equivalent of an Andrew Luck. Miami will not allow themselves to get raped over the bed in a deal for one. They could try to trade up for Johnson which costs less. We would have in essence drafted a RT #1 and would more than likely not re-franchise BA next year meaning he walks and Miami could make a play for him then if Johnson does not work out.

The value at the top of the draft does not justify giving up a kings ransom to move up as much as some on here hope or wish it does. That and the fact that we are desperate to trade out of 1.1 lessens our bargaining power greatly.
