Chiefs sign Matt Cassel to multi-year contract

Kansas City has the player it sees as a potential franchise quarterback, and now the Chiefs have Matt Cassel locked into a long-term deal.

The Chiefs have signed Cassel to a multi-year contract, a source told The Star on Tuesday. Terms of the deal have not been released, although the team is expected to announce the deal today.

Kansas City acquired the 27-year-old Cassel in March when it traded this year’s second-round draft pick to New England. The Chiefs also acquired linebacker Mike Vrabel in that deal.

Cassel had signed a one-year, guaranteed contract earlier this year with New England – the Patriots tagged the quarterback their franchise player before the trade – that would have paid him upward of $15 million for the 2009 season.

Cassel, a seventh-round draft pick in 2005, took over in Week 1 last season for the injured Tom Brady after the former NFL MVP suffered a season-ending knee injury. Cassel started 15 games, and New England won 11 contests in 2008.

Cassel's arm is stronger than Sanchez' right now. Whether or not that will change once Sanchez gets on an NFL strength program remains to be seen, but it's not likely. Arm strength is one of Sanchez' weaker characteristics.

I really don't want to get into the whole Cassel/Sanchez debate again but you don't know what you're talking about.

Sanchez has the arm strength to throw a laser 20 yards down the middle of the field to a moving target while standing flatfooted in the middle of the pocket.

Ther aren't many QBs that can do that.

These are the words of Sanchez’s former coach, Pete Carroll:

“He’s got a terrific arm. He’s got a lot of plays on film that demonstrate that. That’s never been an issue.”

I have no problem with people saying that they think his arm will be fine. Time will tell about that one way or the other. I have a problem with people making claims about it being stronger than Cassel's right now when it isn't.

Ok, while true that Cassel has a strong right arm, the applicability of his strength is different from that of a Sanchez, or other QBs who have been regular starters for their teams.

The strange allocation of strength, scientists have learned, is also associated with a lesser quantity of busty, tanned coeds known to surround the subject. When said quantity increases, arm strength in subject's preferred arm tends to decrease slightly.

This does not, repeat NOT, affect one's ability to throw a football.

Here, have some more comments about it from the first group on a simple search:

Marcus Henry, one of the Jets roster players in the camp, said Sanchez’ arm strength was as good as Brett Ratliff’s, but not at Favre’s level. Henry was impressed by the accuracy.

As for the Sanchez arm strength, Henry said it's "not quite at that level" where Brett Favre's arm resided when Henry worked with him last summer but that it's "up there" with Kellen Clemens' ball.

McShay isn’t the only one who has questioned Sanchez’s arm strength since the NFL scouting combine, and Carroll has a theory why: Sanchez lofted the ball on some corner routes after air-mailing his first attempt out of bounds. The receivers had to slow down to catch them, creating the illusion that Sanchez didn’t have enough power to lead them.

So, it's not just McShay, and Carroll was trying to explain its seeming weakness at the combine. His own teammate is calling it even with Clemens and Ratliff, as opposed to something throwing all those lasers. In the meantime, Cassel has shown that he can make all the throws on the NFL level.

No, Cassel hasn't shown he can make all the NFL throws, which is why his arm stregth is questionable.
