Has it occurred to you that we're ending older high $$$ contracts to create room to sign new one's?

We desperately need to add talent at S, CB, DL, and LB. You can't rebuild all of that in one offseason but you can add 2 to 3 high priced FA's on defense (one CB, one S, one DL/LB) and use the draft for rest.

It clearly looks to be a total rebuild on keeping only younger guys like Jones, Nadi, Fuller, etc...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Yes. You know how Veach decided to apply the 5th year option on Ford? He mentioned that he made his decision based on that stretch of games when Ford was playing great and getting sacks before getting injured. He was a genius.

Surely you wouldnt have given him that 5th year option.

And Chris Jones will be paid handsomely, 2019 or 2020. The point being, you tried to use the lack of sacks against Brady as some sort of argument to devalue Ford's worth.

In that case, Donald, Jones and Bosa aren't worth it either.

NO ONE got to Brady in the 2018 post season. That's not an indictment on the players.

Anyone with eyes could see the Pats game plan all post season was quick hitters to protect Brady.

That makes no sense. You're going to pay 7.5 Sack Flowers MAYBE $2M less for less production in "Win Now" mode? Really?
Stop looking at AAV. Look at the 2019 cap. Flowers is NOT going to cost $14M against the cap in 2019, for any team.

And Dee Ford has a LENGTHY injury history, followed closely by a history of being very inconsistent. Everybody keeps bringing up his 10 sacks in his 3rd season.

Does anybody actually recall that he had all 10 sacks in the first 9 weeks? He didn't notch a single sack during the stretch run going into the playoffs. He COMPLETELY disappeared.

Again, I said this boils down to what we value as human beings. For me, I view the chance of Dee Ford repeating 2018 about the same as his chances of being far worse than 2018, or worse, hurt again.

You want to take that risk. I don't. I NEVER will.

I think that's a reasonable expectation.

It also means we're overpaying for the position out of fear...

You're going to add two high priced F/A's by ridding yourself of the salary of one? Really? C'mon now.

The $15M you save from trading Ford is immediately spent on Collins or whatever other single player.

I'm not asking Trey Flowers to rush the passer.

I'm personally not that high on Trey Flowers but that's the name that's being discussed.

For me, I'm asking Trey Flowers to show up, play smart, disciplined football, for a cap hit that is far less than Dee Ford's in 2019. Sacks aren't the only thing that's important.

The thing with the risk is, that we are probably gonna need that high upside to get where we wanna go. Or atleast it would go a long way towards helping get there.

If they tag him and he gets hurt again as your assuming, it's not as if that's going to torpedo the season. Look at this past season.

I'm not commenting on if it's a good or bad idea I'm only saying what it appears they are doing.

My preference would have been to add Ryan, stay in the 3-4 with a better DC, and make another run.

That didn't happen so now the only thing we can hope for is the org getting Spags everything he feels he needs to run his D.

Did that 5th year option use up $16M of the cap and/or prevent them from signing other free agents?

I've said before, I wouldn't be opposed to signing Ford. It's not ideal but it's better than tagging him and keeping him. You're basically hinging your 2019 defensive performance on a coin flip.

Teams normally don't. They use the tag to start a conversation over compensation and then reach an agreement (like a high 2nd and a 4th instead - for example.)

I don't really have a problem with them gutting the D if that's what they want to do.

But that should have been done last year. Now you're a year later and a year closer to your QB getting broken off.

If they fail to get any secondary help in FA because of Ford's cap number and he gets hurt, the season is likely over right then and there.

How good would they have been this past season if Ford went down again?
