2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Yep. 6 and 6 in that stretch and we are 35-29 right now. Outside that stretch we are playing around 5 games over .500.

Alot of times, these things have a way of evening out over the course of a long season.

Perhaps the Royals are due for a 7-10 game win streak at some point?

I hope so. Right now we are in a winning 5 of 6 stretch. Being swept by the Pirates was brutal. If we can take the series or maybe sweep the Astros then have the Cardinals come to town with a chance at getting to .500 that would be HUGE. I know it is a lot of ifs but hopefully Sanchez can pitch decent like he did in his last outing. Butler will be back in the lineup tonight against a lefty in Happ who has been pretty miserable this year as well. His last two outings: @ SF, 3.1 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 1 BB and vs St. Louis, 4,2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER. 5 BB.

There is no reason why they can't take 2 of 3 from Houston. STL might be a different story just because we play well on the road but are awful for some reason at home.

I was starting to think that when we won 4 straight.

I'd be happy just winning a bunch of series from now until the all-star break. The season is long enough that we can make up the early struggles. Being in the hunt when (if) Odorizzi and Myers come up would be huge. Maybe we could pluck a decent starter at the deadline without giving up too much. Although, I'd be all for trading Myers for a good starter, as long as its not a rent-a-player situation.

No way. To me he is untouchable. We can get rid of Broxton and Frenchy plus perhaps another minor leaguer for the same starting pitcher Myers would bring.

I really doubt that. He is a legit prospect, and you need to give something up to get something. I don’t think we could get anything of significant value for a bunch of stuff we don’t really want and/or is in the last year of their contract.

I bet some of you are the same guys that, in fantasy football, try to trade 3 TEs for Aaron Rodgers.

I’m okay trading him because 1) pitching is EVERYTHING in baseball, even more so in the playoffs (assuming we ever get there) 2) we’ve got enough offensive weapons to be able to compete 3) he is a corner outfielder, which is easier to replace than, say, a bad@ss 3rd baseman or SS.

It's a hell of a lot easier to project position players. Thus, it would be shocking, given all of the evidence that we have so far, if Myers doesn't end up being, at least, a good ML starter. And the potential for All-Star caliber is very high, especially if he sticks in CF.

Pitchers, on the other hand, are far less predictable and ALWAYS GET HURT. No way would I trade a young, easily-to-project position player for a pitcher, generally speaking.

Trade all the arms in the farm system, though. JSAUTO is going to want to kill me, but I'd even more OdorEazy for a high-quality, proven (and controllable) ML arm.

You don't get a good top end starting pitcher for one prospect no matter how legit. Remember how much we got for Grienke? It was a lot. We are much better off trading some expendable parts for a solid starter if we can. And where have you been to think we have enough offensive weapons? I know it seems like we "should" and with Perez and Cain back it should improve but right now we simply do not. Corner outfield defenders are a little easier to replace but not guys who rake like him.

Oh, and Cain should be moved tomorrow if there's any type of legit value.
