Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

That wasn't what he said at all.

Derrick Johnson and Dustin Colquitt have been the consistents ever since the Chiefs started putting up 4-12 seasons under Herm. You don't see people clamoring for them to get cut.

But you also wouldn't draft those players at 1.1

if Joeckel or Fisher had to play a year at RT would they forget how to play left? Or Albert can't move? Just saying there's places for OL too.

Look at the impact Joe Thomas has had on the Browns.

What does that tell you about LTs? So even if he does turn out to be Joe Thomas, how much does that really help us?

7-9 the year before he arrived
9-7 the year before that.

He's done his job and it's made no difference to the overall success of the team. They were essentially the exact same team after he arrived as they were before he got there.

9-7
7-9
8-8
8-8
4-12
8-8

That's exactly the hellish mediocrity that building your team around a premier LT is going to get you.

Have fun with that.

Browns the 6 years before Joe Thomas: 35-61

Browns the 6 years after Joe Thomas: 33-63

That's how much impact even a great LT like Joe Thomas has. And we're supposed to expect Joeckel to have a bigger impact?

You're wasting your breath, DJ.

We've already gone 10-6 with Albert.

Does Joeckel take the 2010 Chiefs further?

Absolutely not.

Exactly.

If you're looking at a LT that probably goes in the 12-14 range most years and comparing him to a QB that probably goes anywhere from 8-24 most years (I think that's completely fair given the way the draft has fallen), then you're really talking about guys who's 'true' value differs in the margins. Neither is seen as a generational talent.

So at least go with the guy that might make a difference. Taking a LT when you already have Brandon Albert is just asinine and will ultimately make no difference in how this team performs over the next 1/2 decade.

1st round OT's have no impact at all you say?

EVERY playoff team last year drafted a 1st round OT. 9/12 teams were starting LT's.

But they shouldn't trade Albert. If they don't, I'd be fine with Floyd, Jordan and Starr if they absolutely cannot get out of the pick. I woudn't even be that upset with Ansah, but there's huge bust potential there.
Thanks, just tired of all the debate about the "problem" with very little talk about a realistic solution. I tend to agree with you here. We don't get better trading out left tackles, unless you get really lucky and hit on a star in round 2 with the Dolphins pick and Joeckel or Fisher are at least as good as Albert. OR, Albert's back is really an issue, and we're looking to dump that risk off to another team (I don't think his back is a problem, but I'm not going to suggest I know more than our GM and HC).
