Self takes guys and breaks them down. He puts them in the doghouse, calls them out in the media, and gradually pulls them back into the fold. That's great for guys who stick around for 3-4 years like Releford, Withey, Robinson, and Ellis. It just doesn't work for guys who see themselves as just parking themselves on a campus for a few months until they can declare for the draft. Every one of those players has under-performed (Selby, Wiggins, Henry, Selden, Oubre, Alexander).

I don't get why he bothers. You aren't going to beat Calipari by getting more out of one and done kids than he is, and you sure as hell aren't going to do it with the players he didn't want.
Calipari team isn't all one and dones.

Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, Dakari Johnson, Marcus Lee, Willie Cauley-Stein, Alex Poythress...

Lyles, Ulis, Booker and Towns are all buying in but one has to wonder when you have such a strong group of players coming back is that really Cal or just the new guys not having as much pressure on them.

Booker, Towns and Lyles will all go pro and hopefully for Kentucky the cycle continues.

But you aren't going to win a title without these top 10 guys.

The trick is getting Wiggins and Embiid to be slightly worse than they were so they come back. If that were to happen KU would have been a freight train.

You're incorrect in saying Wiggins "underperformed". He is the all-time leader for KU freshmen in Scoring and Rebounding.

He didn't have a Durant or Anthony Davis level impact but he doesn't belong in that group you put him with in your post.

This. I have had an issue with these one and dones at Kansas for awhile. I have said basically the same thing. I wish the NBA would just do away with the stupid rule that they have to go to school for a year. They should make it that they have to either a) go to college for at least 3 years or go straight to the NBA.

both Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker were absolutely HORRENDOUS in the Madness last year. No heart. I was appalled by both performances.

Yeah...Wiggins didn't even lead his team in rebounds by a freshman, so I'm going to go ahead and ignore Bambi's opinion.

Hell ...

Michael Beasley was a hell of a college player. Derrick Rose was pretty good. Durant and Carmelo were awesome. Anthony Davis was a beast.

Wiggins was just DISAPPOINTING.

Now, I'll give Wiggins the benefit of the doubt in the fact that, other than Durant, all of those aforementioned guys were already fully developed specimens. Wiggins still kind of looked like an 18 year old kid. Wiggins at 25 might be a scary, scary, scary player.

I would happily take him over the brokedick we gave control of our basketball team to.
I'm sorry, I didn't keep up. MU fan?

I'd agree with that. But to be fair, it is working. Think about the dumbass team that would be kicking themselves for picking JOSH SELBY.

Wiggins killed it. He was the best one and doner KU has had, save for maybe Embiid.

Lucas and Traylor are garbage, and if Ellis isn't scoring he's a liability all together....****in pussy I've never seen a more soft player than him. Alexander is no use to this team if he can't get on the court due to elig issues. No PG depth...Graham has to get better. There were major holes on this Kansas team and it's a miracle they were able to win the conference reg season title again....a ****in' miracle.
KU was 333rd out of 351 teams in the country in terms of getting their shot blocked (12.7% of the time). Tells you quite a bit about the team's lack of skill inside and their inherent softness. That's the worst it has been since Self's first year in 2004 (9%).

Ignoring the fact that Wiggins and Henry weren't disappointments at all, it's important to note Self doesn't employ a system that exactly maximizes the skills of such wing players. It's very big oriented and always has been (which should have helped Cliff, but he was not ready and did not develop).

Wiggins and Parker were two of the most timid, non-clutch one and doners I've ever seen...last March Madness both of them were EMBARRASSING to their teams. I'm sorry, it's true.

Wiggins was sweet. He took a 10 seed to a 5 seed and Embiid took us to a 1 or 2 when healthy. Too bad it didn't work out for Embiid. Wiggins should never have come to Kansas anyway because Bills stupid high-low and slow down snails pace was terrible for Wiggins skill set (it was great for Embiid by comparison). Wiggy shouldve gone to UNC

As for KU I had lunch just now with my friendly informer. Lots of stuff going on inside the program and esp with staff (including the dude who just mailed in 2015) that explains why nobody gave a shit when we sucked balls this last 6 weeks. By our standards anyway

One bad March Madness game doesn't change the 30+ games before that. But as I just said, Self's system just does not allow a player like him to thrive. NBA game is a much better fit for his skill set.
